She's torched at least as much credibility as anyone else, and possibly more. A good lesson in reminding everyone that just because someone can put the word 'Doctor' before their name doesn't mean that they're good.

I work with someone who is a doctor of engineering, he is epically useless.

Schools are safe, because Boris has declared it so. Sit shoulder to shoulder with strangers, with no PPE for 6 hours a day. It's fine.

Shops? No, no, masks are essential. But schools are fine. The virus doesn't go in to schools. You trust your government don't you? they have your best interests at heart, certainly.

Whatever you do, do not visit your friends at home, it is NOT SAFE. But schools are fine. Trust us. Wear a mask at work. But stop worrying about schools, they're fine, it's all safe.

My office, which on a day with completely full capacity would have significantly less than 20 people in a small office that never the less is bigger than most classrooms and would still have more space between the staff, has instituted the following rules for return to the office.

- no-one can sit next to or directly opposite anyone

- desk spaces have been turned into cubicles effectively with sheeting around the occupied desks to isolate then further.

- a one way system has been instituted to move around the office

- the break out/kitchen area is off limits

- the toilets have a designated waiting area with specific guidance on using the facilities

- the lift can't be used

- office hours have been altered so people arrive and leave separately

But yeah, schools, which aren't famously Petri dishes in motion filled with occupants that don't follow rules very well, are completely safe.

Shitting on the floor's out then?

In fairness based on some of the office toilet horrors I've seen, this could be Covid-19's biggest plus point.

Until it gets Trump and Johnson anyway.

Has there been any reports of spikes in schoools? Is there lots of evidence of children infecting each other and bringing it home to their parents? I'm genuinely interested

You mean in the schools that have basically been shut for the last 5 months? How could there be any?

And in the schools that were open for all the children of the key workers?

You realise that this wasn't normal 35-40 to a class schooling?

I do yes. In my area there were perhaps 70 - 80 children in the primary school and about 150 in the senior school. Most of the parents of these children are doctors and nurses ( Solihull is an affluent area after all). These are the people who will be massively exposed to the virus day after day. And yet there was no spike in either of the schools. Indeed, there didn't appear to be any transmission at all.

Maybe things will change, but children should absolutely be back at school, if only for their mental health!

My understanding is that the risk is relatively low in Primary but its the children aged 12 or 13 and above that are the ones more at risk of infection and therefore spreading the virus throughout their communities and beyond

So 150 in a Senior School sounds like a relative small number in an environment compared to normal circumstances

Park playgrounds now reopened round here. So we took the grandchildren to the local one. Signs everywhere about social distancing, e.g. four swings, only two to be used at a time. All in use, obviously.

Scottish schools returned a couple of weeks ago, I believe there is a school in Dundee where something like 39 cases have been identified, mostly among the teachers, which would suggest either the teachers are all touching each other, or the problem with kids is that they can be carriers.

twitter says 39, NHS Tayside says 34, you pays your money and takes your choice

Quote

KINGSPARK SCHOOL

COVID-19 confirmed cases as at 2pm:

• Number of confirmed COVID-19 positive cases = 34
This is made up of:

• 21 members of staff

• 3 pupils

• 10 community contacts

The school remains closed and all staff and pupils continue to self-isolate. Household members of pupils should also continue to self-isolate if they are unable to maintain physical distancing within the household

Do you live in an affluent area then?

My kids go into year 4 and 6 next week. For me I think the benefits (mental heath, physical health and education of course) hugely outweigh the relatively low chance of them getting ill with the virus.

I think that’s about right, it’s the structure to lives and the education and the socialising that is really important.

I think the kids are less at risk than the grandparents that will be picking them up at 3:30pm, I think that’s where the problem could be.
