Douglas Luiz

we've also seen 'Peak Doug' at times this season, showing some of his best form for us, form that again had him linked to all the big boys.

he just doesn't adapt well to playing in roles he is not as effective in, putting him in the defensive holding role in front of our defence has never been where he shines.

But now Tielemans is out, we have no choice but to play Doug and McGinn, neither of whom play the defensive role well and not sure Emery can risk starting Tim in high pressure games.

It's a shame Zaniolo is injured, though wildly inconsistent, his ball retention and physicality are missed. Emery needs to put an arm round Doug and try and find a way of settling that midfield down so that we can get through the final games of this incredible season.

But really does show we need better midfield back up options. You'd think we honestly had one more central midfielder from the youth we could call on right now, rather than just Tim who isn't a defensive midfielder either.

The plethora of young players we have, but not one we can call upon with confidence to come into our midfield, or indeed in goals.

We will need to buy for those positions, and indeed in other positions, for instance up front.

So what is our youth system - an expensive hobby? - a sop to FFT?

Its mainly going to be a revenue generator for FFP, with the occasional gem coming through who is good enough for the first team.

Given how competitive matches are we can't afford to develop a lot of youth players with first team opportunities unless they are exceptional.

Be more than happy to see him go in the summer as long as the offer is right.

Think he will be one we sell and can see us getting around 60-70 mil for him. Good player, nothing really against him, just not sure about his attitude or discipline and think we can use that money better.

Good article in the Athletic today for those who have subscriptions...

Quote

The Brazil midfielder is already staring back at him. The pair share a frank relationship, a testament to how highly Emery rates Douglas Luiz and, as Villa’s head coach often puts it, how “demanding” he is with him.

The 25-year-old has shouldered the burden of being Emery’s go-to man, caught in the crossfire of intensive, labour-exhaustive demands on the pitch. When Villa are not pursuing the state of control Emery usually craves, he will share forthright views with the man in the middle.

With Douglas Luiz’s form tailing off lately, Emery has sought to maintain standards. The midfielder has been substituted in two of the last three league games, as many as the previous 18 before that.

Hopefully puts in a big performance vs Olympiakos and shuts up the critics… would be a major boost if he could hit form again and push us on for the final few games… we need 2023 Dougie back.

Obv having Kamara with him makes a huge difference but I think McGinn is the best option, for that role, that we have in the squad.

No offence but we should be comfortably better than Olympiacos so it's a game I expect Luiz to control in midfield. The ones where we really need him to step up will be Brighton, Liverpool and Palace.

Yes those too but a positive/big performance might see him back in his groove…

I'm one of his biggest fans but he's been a disgrace tonight, cowardly effort for the penalty - instead of challenging for a header he's putting his arm up

Just an awful performance at the wrong time.

We’ve been saying this nearly every week since December.

The hell happened to him?

Shadow of his former self, very schoolboy errors and and he's been picking fights with opposition players non-stop as of late.

No excuse for having arms up like superman in your own box
