Matt Targett

I’m sure I remember Southampton fans saying we overpaid for him and were in fact happy we bought him off them at the time?

Anyway all the best to the guy, his confidence got shot with us and he regained it with Newcastle. It is what it is, these things happen with players all the time.

I’m going to assume the 12 mill fee will either rise to 15m or the loan fee was factored in? Just guessing

Toon try to buy Digne in Jan and fail. They then think they are looking for better than Digne and they all think they are getting Lodi. Instead Villa sign Digne and offload our surplus squad players to Toon. It must be great being a fan of the richest club in the world 🤣

Again was not a competition one day you will understand that

Wet wipe. Are you 6 years old. Grow up, most of your comments on a harmless Matt Targett have been appalling the last 6 months

It’s an opinion man. Like, I find his attitude a problem. I don’t respect that in a squad game he downs tools and wants to leave. Bigs up Newcastle trying to engineer a move away because he believes he’s not good enough. Some players have their ceilings. We moved on to bigger and better things. I appreciate the goals and the efforts he put in during our first season back. Nobody can take that away. It’s tepid criticism of his attitude at best. Let’s not get all Pearl clutching now.

Good riddance Matt. Shame you had the drive of a wet wipe when competition arrived. Attitude stinks. Glad we will be rid.

Did Targett bed your missus or what? It's bordering on villa lad behaviour at this stage.

I agree but in fairness to the recruitment team at the time we needed to attract players to Villa and we were not an attractive proposition at the time. No chance of winning anything and high potential of relegation. In order to convince people to join us we needed to overpay in wages and transfer fees.

Disagree. Why would we have to pay more in fees?

We bought some shocking players (Targett not one) for well over their value.

Think they paid a £5M loan fee. But we have sold cheap, especially given his performances for them.

Why do you think that? As far as I'm aware it hasn't been reported and, like most numbers in football articles, it would likely be made up if it had. All I have seen about it is people in here saying 'if' to make selling him below value more acceptable.

It’s probably good business for both clubs. Suits their style of play not ours. Surplus to requirements for us. Not many clubs in the market for him. We want another left back in the mould of Digne, that’s not Targett.

They’re getting him at a reasonable price but they too (if all goes to plan for them) will be looking to upgrade within a season or so and they definitely won’t profit on him. Not one to get worked up over, he’s been mostly good for us, now we’ve sold him without a loss. We’ve done far worse business.

There's a lot of projection here, isn't there? I can only assume you have 'fought' your whole career and still not really progressed, so you have to apply importance to the fight itself to make you feel better.

For what it's worth you will never achieve a fraction of what Matt Targett has.

He was a wet wipe in the bedroom apparently or he bottled it with the missus 😛

Assuming the made up figures are correct (5m loan+12m now)... you're effectively looking at us having sold him for 17m in January.

When we bought Digne in for 25m (who is an obvious upgrade in the formation we play), that isn't a bad deal.

We don't need or want Targett. This undermines completely are negotiating hand.  We've no idea if anyone else wants him. Newcastle could go out and buy any number of alternatives if they wanted to. Its a decent deal for us, and I won't miss him.

Lol so we aren’t allowed to criticise players now?

Criticise away. It's just this weird obsession you seem to have with constantly posting that style of comment in the Targett thread that I find a bit odd.

Clubs often need incentive to sell as they may not have planned to offload a player. If we go in with a mediocre offer the club may just say No as it would cost them too much hassle and cash to get a replacement. By offering above odds the club will be more likely to sell, will do so quickly and we get a much needed player

The competition part is not true though. I dont know why people keep saying this

Buying a player in a specialised position for 25 million and making him the highest paid player at the club kills any competition in that spot. Digne might be the better player but still if played poor would never get dropped.

Targett never had a chance of winning that job and wanted to play, similar to Guilbert when we signed Cash for 15 million

It is true based on the actual evidence we have and not guesswork

Gerrard stated they wanted to keep Targett to add competition to the left back position, but he wanted to leave.

Maybe you're right about Digne never being dropped regardless of form, but it's pure guesswork and we don't know if it's true either way. All we actually know is the club wanted to keep him and he wanted to leave. I very much doubt anyone would have sat Targett down and said "Look, regardless of how Digne plays you're never going to get in the team unless he's injured or suspended. Deal with it or leave".

Not really sure why people have an issue with this. Recouping the money we paid for a player we no longer need is exactly what we need to start doing. Other than Grealish, I bet this is the first player weve sold for more than £10mil in years. Probably since Dwight Yorke. Haha.

Seriously though is it since Benteke, that's mad if so given that weve signed about 76 players for more than £10mil?

Normally used to most of our squad players leaving for free, endless loans or hanging around for years (NZogbia, Beye, Ireland etc) so to actually get a decent chunk of cash for one is refreshing.

Thanks for the contributions Matt, but I think it's a mutually beneficial parting of ways.
