Just spent £50m assembling the worst squad we've ever had and sending us on an unrecoverable spiral into relegation.

Not too bad at all.

Personally think some of those signings (Gueye, Ayew, Amavi, Veretout) have been the best players we've had here over recent seasons.  Just the wrong manager, ol' Timmy.

We've spent, what, £80m this season and look just as poor, if not worse, than when under Sherwood.  Pretty shocking.

I actually think we will all be very surprised tomorrow night.  I think the penny has finally dropped with him and tomorrow you will see 4-4-2 and us playing a very front foot, aggressive, attacking style.

He has indeed played the awful way he has with us for most his career but I think he has the wits to realise - albeit to late in the day as we cant go up now and are in a relegation fight - that its not working.

Mark my words, a different Vila tomorrow night !!

Which is exactly why he was so terrible.

That quote sums up the problem for me.   He sees the problem we need to address is that we need to "batten down the hatches"   I would rather we treat the problem as "We need to put the little round thingy past that line between the goal posts and under the crossbar way down at THAT end of the field..... and show what we have got on Tuesday."

It would be great

a revelation

And AVFC playing attacking football getting results is what I dream of regardless of the manager

However, that means

                       SJ

Hutton Elphick Chester Taylor

    Hourihane Lansbury Thor

      Adomah Hogan Kodjia

Mark my words - it aint happening

Agree.

Apart from anything else an over emphasis on battening down is precisely what's caused our problems.

And it doesn't do much to dispel the image that he doesn't give a lot of thought to how we actually play the game.

I hope Terry is right.  But he said 4-4-2 and I think you drew out a 4-3-3.  I think Bruce may change formation.   But I'm not feeling optimistic about a change in mentality.

All hope of play offs have left me now, I am slowly coming to terms with being in this crappy division for at least another season. I wanted Bruce out after Saturday, I think that was the due to this realization as I despondently left the ground....again!

No point chopping manager again, give him the remaining 17 games to start moulding his team to be ready to rock in August!

But I do have some questions regarding some of Bruce's decisions, which temper me with doubt going forward :

  • After addressing the full back areas in January, by buying both a new LB and RB...he then switched formation immediately to a 3 at the back system?

This is ludicrous. He bought out and out full backs, and has now decided to play them out of position in what is a specialist Wing Back role. Why?

We already arguably has two players that would be suited to wing back (Amavi and Bacuna), really don't understand why anyone would bring in two full backs and play them out of position immediately. Wing Back and Full Back are NOT the same thing.

  • His persistence with a poor goalkeeper

Bringing in a rookie is one thing, and in fairness all of the worlds great goalkeepers were at some stage young, unknowns with potential. But after 4/5 games I just can't understand why he continues to pick him. Our defence has looked a total shambles since he came in. My lad wondered if the deal to bring him here from Man Utd included a clause that he has to play?

  • Unbalancing the already unbalanced midfield

Before the January transfer window it was universally accepted that our midfield lacked legs and creativity. Bruce bought in 3 attack minded midfielders, all of which are good quality players there is no doubt. However, in letting go 2 more defensively minded midfielders, we were left with only Jedinak to play in that vital deeper role, and when he duly got injured we now have 3 attack minded players occupying our midfield.....it's like we sat on a see-saw and went from one extreme to the other, almost over night!

Perhaps introducing that midfield in front of the established back four may have been a better idea? What Bruce has done is not only change the starting XI, almost entirely, but he has done that at the same time as trying to implement a completely new system. A system that requires specialist players positionally, and without the one key element to make it all work....a deep lying midfielder.

Jury is out for me on Steve Bruce.

With the likes of Mark Warburton now available, I think Bruce has to get us going very, very quickly to give us any hope at all for next season. If he doesn't....how long are we supposed to wait?

Saved us from getting relegated the previous season, then lost a core spine of Benteke, Delph, and Vlaar which was out of his hands which you've conveniently forgot. Were all those signings of the £50m his? I'd assume not seeing as he didn't want to play them all and hardly even had any contact with Veretout and Adama (Veretout's words).

4-4-2:

BUNN

HUTTON - CHESTER - BAKER - AMAVI

LANSBURY

BJARNASON      -      HOURIHANE

GREALISH

HOGAN  -  KODIJA

Reasons:

Bunn is better than Johnstone. Hutton will play due to injuries, but that back four were doing ok before Johnstone came in. Amavi is better than Taylor on Saturdays showing but wouldn't necessarily mind Taylor being played in his correct position of FB.

Lansbury can sit at base of diamond until Jedinak is fit, but he isn't a DM in my view. However his distribution and work rate are superb.

Grealish really has to play. He does have his shortcomings, but we are a different side when he is on the pitch.

Hogan should play on the last shoulder and let Kodija be a nuisance. At some point he needs to start seeing runs/passes!

and your reasoning.

We are at home, we should take the game to anybody and everybody who is in this league.

Bacuna/Bree                  Amavi

They were as much his as any of our signings are the manager's. You think Steve Bruce does all his scouting himself? Plus if rumours are to be believed then the signings he REALLY wanted were the likes of Richards and Lescott.

And you say "he didn't want to play them all and hardly even had any contact with Veretout and Adama (Veretout's words)." as if it's a good thing :D

It's stuff like that that made him such a terrible manager.

Me too, I'm finding it hard to care.  Can I see us being in the Premier League in 18 months with Bruce in charge despite our form?  Yes, it's fairly likely, but it's not exactly going to be thrilling even if we do.  I'm not really convinced by the strategy of signing all the Championship players for big money.  It seems to me that most of the best players are cheap and bust a gut, working hard to get where they are but give them a big transfer fee it adds a whole level of pressure they're not used to handling.

I think you make a huge point and one that is close to the truth....I think we may be inadvertently breeding ego's.

Bruce has never worked with calderwood before - since he took training we have regressed - ditch calderwood and bring in mike phelan as number 2 who was Bruce's number 2 at hull.

Would like to see Phelan at the Villa. Good pass and move coach but Bruce would have to drop the negative tactics first which hopefully he's now going to do.
