The banker loving, baby-eating Tory party thread (regenerated)

The funny thing about everyone resigning over how Boris ignoring allegations against a colleague and promoting him anyway...hasn't Boris himself been subject to basically the same accusations and they all ignored it and promoted him anyway?

If I may say so, this post seems a little...inconsistent - Cutting levies to keep prices the same is "pointless", yet you advocate freezing prices?

Given that there are certain commodities where the cost has rocketed, and thus the overall VAT and tax take to the Gov't has also rocketed, they could cut the percentage tax and still be no worse off, yet the price to us lot would (as you say) perhaps stay the same as it was, or not rise as much. Seems like a no brainer to me - same as with the idea of windfall taxes. Someone making huge unexpected gains from a thing get taxed on that huge gain, and the money used to help people who are struggling.

It would be nice, too, if the Gov't used the tax system to really push investment into alternative energy (renewables), insulation, domestic storage of gas, energy efficiency measures generally and so on. That would have huge long term benefits.

Yeah fair point.

But look at what happened with the fuel duty cut. The prices just went up and swallowed the cut. The fact that prices would be higher without the cut has long been forgotten.

This should be an absolute no-brainer for any govt with any PM.   There is virtually no long-term downside, except maybe less funding/bribes from oil companies!

Sajid Javid will exercise his right as a resigning minister to make a statement to MPs, the Telegraph’s Ben Riley-Smith reports. It will come after PMQs.

Geoffrey Howes speech in 1990 - brought down Margaret Thatcher - its a sign of how much standards have fallen that such a speech right now would barely be seen as news.

Surely game over if Lee **** Anderson has turned

He's a classic one termer. Only got in last time because The Ashfield Independents picked up a huge chunk of the Labour vote. The Tory vote in Ashfield actually shrunk slightly. Take the "Corbyn Effect" out of the vote and you have to imagine Labour stand a good chance of regaining that seat anyway regardless of the current polling.

The only way he stands a chance of re-election is if the Tories vote share increases.

It's also interesting as to why a few of the Swivel Eyed Loons are no longer supporting Johnson. Steve Baker ERG Nutter and MP for Wycombe

2010: 9560 majority

2015: 14856 majority

2017: 6578 majority

2019: 4214 majority

He's been losing vote share because of the failure of the LibDems (they were second in 2010), Labour have been picking those votes up. It's an interesting seat because his best chance of retaining his seat is actually a LibDem resurrection. Wycombe will be an interesting seat to watch next election as will Ashfield

John Glen, the treasury minister, has resigned as well. Averaging about one a hour at the moment.

At the current rate, we'll need another Chancellor by Friday

I would have thought they would have been best to resign after PMQs today.

Boris is going to use that to try and push through. Bit like when you know you are in for a bollocking at work - sort of grit your teeth and get it over with.

Just read his resignation letter. Scathing. No mention of anything Boris has done that he considers to be good work, and a fairly terse mention of Brexit.
