Stevo985 Posted August 14, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted August 14, 2012 Different cars have different gearings, not to mention different amounts of gears. Only on VT could we definitively talk about what gear to be in for a given speed as if there was only one car in the world Well I'd agree with you if we were having a debate of something like "I got to 5th at 40 mph" "But I go to 5th at 42 mph" But when the debate is beteen 40mph and 70 mph then the discussion is valid. BOF Posted August 14, 2012 Moderator Share Posted August 14, 2012 Yes but Amsterdam, the penalty for not having excellent judgement without a clutch is the need for a new clutch / gearbox, so you can appreciate why some would like to use it. Eames
^^ Huh?! Isn't that how you **** up the syncromesh? Surely its foot off gas, depress clutch, select gear, release clutch, back on the gas? It does not make a sound if you do it right. I used to drive for a living and jumped in and out of up to 10 different cars a day. Once you are moving you don't need a clutch. As long as you don't stop moving its fine. I had a clutch go halfway back from Bedford to Redditch but still got home or after 2 or 3 hundred miles I just got a bit lazy some days, if high powered then the clutch is heavy after hours and hours so made sense to me. Ahhh if they were work cars I believe Rule 7 "Drive 'em like you stole 'em" applies. But I aint going to find out if you're right in mine.
hogso
Things that piss you off that shouldnt; people talking about cars and driving when I DON'T DRIVE OK, I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT MEANS MAN. It happens when my mates talk about driving too they just go on and on. Then I try to change the topic of conversation, but it never works, cos I'm vastly outnumbered ofc. Amsterdam_Neil_D
I don't even have a car just to do a few more peoples heads in I gave it up becasue of the costs + I get 2 hours reading time a day. I live 200 M from the former formula 1 track in Holland also and have gone round that a few times when I get the need for speed. Expensive though. PieFacE Posted August 14, 2012 VT Supporter Share Posted August 14, 2012 Well I know nothing about cars, other than how to make them go and stop, hence me bringing up this stupid subject... but I feel slightly more educated now!

coda
Bought a football shirt off ebay and it stinks. It smells like the previous owner just ran a marathon, wrestled with a moulting dog and sprayed it with Lynx before posting it. I'd make sure an item was clean before selling it. BOF Posted August 14, 2012 Moderator Share Posted August 14, 2012 Ugh coda that's rank. Some people are barely human. My ebay comment would be Positive "Great seller, great communication, but smelly bastard. A++++"
PussEKatt
Amsterdam is technically right but he's being slightly unrealistic. You'd have to be going exactly the right speed so as to slot the gear in seamlessly. It's not really what we're talking about here Though it is another thing VT is good at If this discussion is about motorcycles as well as cars and gears then I can definately say that you can change up and down without the clutch on a motorcycle,I have done it loads of times. Not only that but about 20 other guys in the same group as me all could do it, and none of us were specialist motorcycle riders. Changing down is a bit harder, ( but only a bit ) I am talking about 100 years ago, when I was a teenager.
Wainy316
Why don't people just drive automatics? Nobody else in the world seems to bother with gears anymore. If it was up to me, driving would be controlled by a PlayStation pad in the drivers seat. X to accelerate, square to brake.
BOF Posted August 14, 2012 Moderator Share Posted August 14, 2012 Why don't people just drive automatics? Nobody else in the world seems to bother with gears anymore. They're more expensive to buy. They've got worse fuel economy. They're more expensive to maintain if (when) something goes wrong with the clutch(es)/gearbox. You don't have as much control of the engine (if you actually like 'driving'). The only advantage I see in an automatic is that it frees up a hand allowing you to be a more distracted driver
