PaulC
There was certainly one very good corner which he hit with pace.
Harry
Much as I rate Westwood he has been pretty poor so far this season. As for his corners on Saturday he seemed to put most on them straight on Lukaku's head who stood in precisely the same place for every corner. Westwood's are better than say Bannan's and a few others but there is still much work to do as we offer very little threat from most set pieces
Wainy316
Surely Bacuna would be a good shout for corners?
poitier
When was the last time we took a short corner, or showed any sort of creativity from a setpiece? It isn't just the taker of the setpiece at fault here.
Papillon
In terms of corners, it's the general ability that counts and it's not worth pointing out ONE corner that actually turned out fine. To put it in context, even I or anyone else with a decent 3rd division experienced foot could make an assist from a corner. My impression is that Westwood, much like Bannan, just lofts it into the area and it makes no sense. When it is played like a golf-shot the defenders have more time to harass it and the striker has to generate twice the power as opposed to a faster and curled in-swing. When we had Laursen here we kind of just tried to hit him or at least give him a chance to head the ball with pace, now it takes plain coincidence for anything to happen. It is clearly not working, so why no try something else or just play it short and try to create a few setups? When Westwood lofts it is it is either gathered easily by the goalkeeper, headed away by some pole like Michael Dawson or maybe struck into nowhere by one of our players. Corners are obviously not a dangerous weapon according to stats, but at least we should try to make those odds a little better...
BOF Posted October 29, 2013 Moderator Share Posted October 29, 2013 It's a real shame there isn't some app that charts all of Westwoods passes and can show you whether he passes forward. Oh wait.Where is that again. Isn't it a Guardian page? EDIT : Guardian chalkboard and it's no longer up and running
Kwan
If you filter Westwood and all passes, it'll show his passing chart. http://Premier League.squawka.com/aston-villa-vs-everton/26-10-2013/english-barclays-premier-league/matches
Big_John_10
He doesn't seem to be performing to last seasons standards. At the moment KEA looks much improved and I think it's time Sylla had his chance. Westwood is still young and doesn't need to be first name on the sheet each week. Kwan
What's kind of disturbing about those passing charts are the complete lack of forward passes or even crosses into the box by Tonev, Andi and Gabby. All of their passes are backwards. Delph and Westwood's passing charts are all over the place, particularly Delph's so it's not like the ball isn't getting into the right positions. The forwards just aren't doing their part in combination with their finishing. Edited October 29, 2013 by Kwan

That's just an inevitability.
Kwan
That is true, but I count maybe one pass that's into the box?

StefanAVFC
I believe it was only to dispel the myth that 'he only passes sideways', not to show how good he is.

AvfcTheObsession
I think what would have helped Westwood out massively this season is having a calm head next to him, someone with more experience and nous. He managed to keep his form pretty good throughout a difficult season for Villa last term, but appears to be having 'second season syndrome', he is effectively the focal point of our defensive midfield which is a big thing given it's only his second season at this level and he's still quite young. BOF Posted October 29, 2013 Moderator Share Posted October 29, 2013 Looks like he made it to the final 3rd of the pitch on 3 different occasions. Wow! Call him up for England!Swing and a miss. Someone who pulls the strings from midfield and who passes it forwards as has been proven by the previous graphic is not required to be in the final third as often. That's the job of the more attacking players. But nice attempt to move the goalposts rather than concede even an inch on the original point :-)
