The Arab Spring and "the War on Terror"

You're implying 'our' way is better. If, for example, the Irish gave half as much of a shit as they do over there about things then we wouldn't be in the mess we're in. And to our eternal shame, we're more than happy to just watch football, drink beer and do **** all that actually matters. The reason they go about things over there in the way that they do is because they don't always have the avenues open to them that we have over here. We have them and don't always use them. You'd probably need to walk a mile in their shoes to get it.

For all its faults 'our' way is better, without doubt. Protest movements are out in the streets across the MENA region and sacrificing their lives for ideals of freedom and democracy.

That our electorates (and it's hardly restricted to Ireland) are generally apathetic is a reflection of the malaise in Western societies, not in the principle of democratic governance.

BBC reporting that a Libyan official has said that the US ambassador has been killed.

Edit:

The US ambassador to Libya has died after an attack by militiamen on the US consulate in the eastern city of Benghazi, reports say.

Ambassador Christopher Stevens is said to be among four US officials killed in a protest over a US-produced film that is said to insult the Prophet Muhammad.

The US state department has only confirmed the death of one official - but it has not named them.

Protesters have also attacked the US embassy in Cairo over the film.

In the attack in Benghazi, unidentified armed men stormed the grounds, shooting at buildings and throwing handmade bombs into the compound.

Security forces returned fire but Libyan officials say they were overwhelmed.

A Libyan official has said Ambassador Stevens died from suffocation as a result of the attack.

And I'm not sure about the veracity of this twitter thing (which includes a grim picture of someone being carried off by a mob - purported to be someone from the consulate) - pic.twitter.com/twHXdZGx

Oops..

Destroying an Embassy and killing the Ambassador is technically an act of war.

Standing by to hear from the beards why this is actually America's fault because a few dicks made a film about Mohammed.

the sooner islamic culture grows the **** up and accepts freedom to comment and satire the better, though sadly I don't expect it to happen anytime soon. The Christians still go a bit loopy, and they've been round longer.

Personally I have no wish in drawing mohammed, but for those who do, one ought to be free from the risk of death. Violent cowards. Undoubtedly fundamentalist in nature, but I do wonder how just how many moderates there actually are in these countries...

about 99.9% of them ?

You can't even call the pope the anti christ in the Euro parliament without getting a right hander from some catholic , religion isn't free of risk it seems :-)

Nothing will change until Islam has mainstream leadership who are brave enough to be introspective.

The "Leadership" worship money over Muhammed every time...it's the people who need to accept differing views. But that will never happen. Just look at the sectarian violence across the Muslim world. A Sunni will strap bombs on himself and walk into a Shia wedding and vice versa. Even if you worship Allah and pray three times a day, and fast and don't drink, you and your children are still worth blowing into chunks of skull and flesh simply because of the sectarian difference.

Also, they want to take over the world. That never helps the cause of peace.
