David Beckham - Legend

He was a good footballer in his day. However I don't like the making out that he was the only one who could take a free kick (if that makes sense). Brunt's free kick on Saturday was better than Beckham ever produced and there are plenty of players who could do it as consistantly. Fair play for all the stuff he has done though, I was just highlighting something that bugs me about the hype surrounding the free kicks.

seems to me like you need to watch this

Not really. I'm not arguing the point he didn't take good free kicks. Just that he seems to be made out to be the best free kick taker and there is nobody else who can do it as consistently (from sections of media not everyone of course). It's so small it should go in the 'things that piss you off that shouldn't' thread in off topic.

Fourth best player in Man Utds midfield

Good player

overated

Symbol of the slow destruction of football by the worship money, image and celebrity

If he is an England legend it probably goes a long way to explaining our abject failure on the world stage over the past 12 years

Whist I agree he is a great ambassador for our country.

I dont think you can say he's not interested in his wages etc...

MLS? He could've signed for plenty of prem clubs if his wage demands weren't so high.

His wages have nothing to do with not signing for another prem club. He's always said that he wouldnt play for any other prem club after united.

I would agree with him been a legend great dead ball specialist, pinpoint crossing, Great heart leading by example never gave up always gave 100% .....I think I remember he used to train hes free kicks after training had finished and fergie had to fine him a few times over it to try and stop him overdoing it

Hard to imagine many others with his status in the world doing this.

Football hero David Beckham turned good samaritan yesterday, when he stopped to help a broken-down motorist.

Dad-of-two Paul Long, 46, was on a school-run near his Hertfordshire home when his eight-year-old family Nissan Primera broke down at a junction.

As he struggled to heave his motor out of the road, the former England skipper pulled over to lend a hand, leaving the stunned dad and his kids open-mouthed.

Ringing in to Richard Bacon’s phone-in show on BBC Radio 5 Live, Paul revealed: “I was taking my kids to school this morning when the car packed up as we approached a busy roundabout over the A10.

“We were in the middle of a very busy roundabout. Cars were buzzing past and I had two kids in the back but no one stopped, no one came to help.

“After 10 minutes I saw a car had pulled over into a lay-by in the distance. Its hazard lights came on.

“A figure got out, wearing a hoodie. This sort of slipped down and as he got nearer it became apparent to me it was David Beckham.

“I said, ‘You’re, David Beckham’ and then he nodded.

“He asked if we were OK and I said. ‘Could you give us a push over to the side?’ which he duly did. Someone else came to help as well.

“Then he asked again if we were OK and as he walked away I said. ‘Thanks David, I love you’.

“I could only see his car in the distance, it looked like an Audi, but I could not be sure on that. It wasn’t flash.”

Later, he said he was now Beckham’s “biggest fan” after his encounter with the star.

Speaking later from the home in Ware, Herts, which he shares with his wife, son 8, and daughter, six, Tottenham Hotspur fan Paul added: “He was a legend and a true, honest citizen.

“I have always admired him but what he did for me was lovely. I’m his biggest fan now although I do feel a bit stupid that I told him I loved him.

“He’s a genuinely top bloke, especially as he braved the rain to do what he did.”

Paul was in his eight-year-old Nissan Primera with his daughter, six, and son, eight.

A spokesperson for Beckham, currently training with Tottenham ahead of the new season with his US team Los Angeles Galaxy, confirmed the story.

Id imagine any decent person (celebrity or not) would do the same thing and the person who got help wouldnt go to the media ;)

Well actually cars break down all the time and hundreds of cars drive past without helping for whatever reason, especially when raining. Also considering who he is, I'd say plenty of people in his position would of just drove on. I think anyone who helps you in that position is a nice bloke but I don't think many others with his status as an 'icon' would do the same, just the simple things that many would chose to ignore, huge millionaire footballer or not.

Legend at football? Debatable, certainly a very good player. England's best ever player? Nope, Bobby Charlton was a better player and a better figure for English football IMO.

I'm not sure how many people think he is England's best ever player. I made a point earlier in the thread where I suggested that Beckham was England's greatest ever servant, which is something I stand by. He has never turned his back on his country, I dont recall him ever pulling out of a friendly a lá Steven Gerrard or Wayne Rooney, he never gave up when dropped by McLaren or Fabio and he got his place back in the side on merit on both occasions. His role in the bid for the 2018 world cup was above and beyond in my opinion. He didnt take a penny in wages for that as far as I am aware. It's clear to see that he loves football and loves England as much as the most passionate fan out there, which is a damn sight more than I can say for pretty much every other footballer of his generation.

He was the best player in the England team by a mile for two or three years under Sven though, his performance against Greece is a career defining one crowned by an amazing goal but its easy to forget just how brilliant he had been in the 89 minutes before that free kick went in. Beckham is an icon, and he deserves his status. Okay, some might not be a fan of the celebrity lifestyle he leads off the pitch, but lets not forget just how great a player he was in his heyday. He will be missed when he finally hangs his boots up.

If you watch the free kick in that video at
#t=4m52s he scores against us at Old Trafford. That is the goal where Dwight Yorke is alleged to have kissed his Manchester United badge in front of the travelling Villa support. He did run over to celebrate directly in front of the us after the goal, but its worth mentioning he didnt kiss the United badge.

I think you'd do well to find someone who convered more distance in a game than Becks did vs Greece that day.

Seems a top bloke. I'd love him to get one more home game for England in a friendly. There might not be room for sentiment in football anymore, but I don't see what harm a few minutes towards the end of a friendly would do.

Beckham appears a good servant to England, but the way he has treated his current club is shameful. He was rightly called out for it by Landon Donovan, and he continues to behave in the same way rather than honor his contract or respect his teamates. That is no role model. That said, I would have a pint with him.
