Ashes 2021 England Averages

Warning! These figures make for some painful reading.

When only two of your batsmen average over 30 runs, none of the openers average above 15 runs, and Woakes is listed as our 4th best batsman, then serious questions need to be asked about the standard of player and the batting coaching.

well that was a mixed day. Fundamentally, being a 160 runs behind with 3 wickets to go is never great, but we must take small mercies - very gusty partnership between Stokes and Bairstow. Fairplay to JB too. Giving us a decent chance of saving this test, coming away with a draw. Big thing tonight is to not lose the last 3 wickets for like 15 runs in 2 overs.  Whatever we score, if we can just bat for an hour, force them to take the new ball and scrap, then that keeps the relative positive flow moving. If, we can get the deficit under a hundred runs, then that would represent a good finish in the circumstances. Much beyond that is probably far too optimistic against this attack and the new ball. But, for heaven's sake, just don't toss it away within the first 15 minutes please.

No Stokes next time, another failure by Buttler... I'd  consider a 5th test line up of

Burns, Crawley, Malan, Root, Pope, Bairstow, Woakes, Wood, Broad Leach Anderson.

Yes, that knocked the wind out of their sails

A bit of surprise batting from Bairstow and co. I dropped off just before they really got going, so it's nice to see we've managed to put together a couple of partnerships.

With the weather report for tonight and tomorrow - this could be enough. Onwards to glory!

Playing well after the Ashes have gone is a bit like playing some decent football at 5-0 down. It's worthless.

Garbage time as they call it in the NFL.

As things stand I think it's like playing some decent football at 3-0 down. But... faced with the fact that we could still easily lose 5-0.

I don't think it's worthless because I'd much rather lose the series 3-0 than 5-0. At least it would be an improvement in the result, which will be there in the records forever.

Shame for Bairstow to get out so meekly but a great knock, can’t see Anderson/Broad fancying facing this new ball in a couple of overs’ time so I suspect we’ll be bowling very soon again.

As an aside, it’s only just dawned on me that BT Sport seem to have finally decided to put together their own commentary team instead of piggybacking off the local audio…..blatantly just watching it on a tv together somewhere in London but still less excruciating than having to listen to the gloating Aussies.

If we assume we're going to lose a fair bit of tomorrow, if not all of it, to the weather - and we assume that Australia will want to win this series 5-0, then how long do they bat here and how many do they look to put on? If I were them, I'd have gone full T20 by now - a quick 150 or so will put them 300 ahead and in with a chance of bowling us out by the end of the day - slowly put another 250 on and they're giving up the win and the whitewash.

I hope we lose a lot of tomorrow to rain but I don't know, the BBC forecast for tomorrow is only "light" rain. And hey, where's this thunderstorm that we're supposed to have today? That's what I want to know! (And where's Sidcow with his rain dance gifs?! Come on man!)
