Atheists can (and do) have moral codes as well - and, just like the god botherers, most fail to stick to them. Human beings behave fairly predictably. FWIW I prefer a set of values that have been worked out for their utilitarian usefulness to the human race, rather than ones handed down simply because because god(s) say so in The Big Black Book. Particularly the rise of neoconservatism and the resurgence in traditional Christianity in the US. Bush's core vote was from the Christian right. I wouldn't have thought torture, war, a complete disregard for human life and the environment, selfish capitalism (which has created the biggest gap between rich and poor ever) and Christian values would make good bed fellows. On the other hand, the more secular Europe has always been traditionally much more socialist, with things like the NHS in the UK, the welfare state, wealth redistribution......Christian values??? I accept I can't prove there is no god, but believers will have to accept that god's existance is as scientifically likely as the omnipotent Flying Spaghetti Monster. Can't disprove the existance of either, but it's not bloody likely that they do exist is it? I also accept I can't explain how something, like the beginning of the universe, happened out of an absolute nothing. Then again believers equally have to explain how god was created out of nothing. If it's at all possible to know that anything doesn't exist, I know for certain that there is no god. And don't call me an agnostic for saying that - there is an answer to the question, theoretically. We just have no way of finding it, as the universe as far as I know is infinite. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat. 200 years ago people started to document growth patterns in life forms, and so know people are so sure there is nothing beyond there own comprehension that they denounce the idea of a higher being. Our ideas of the universe have refined as we have developed the scientific approach to studying it. Flath earth theories originated from the thought " well there's an horizon over there and a line where the sky and the water meet - must mean its flat". " yeah, right on, ODNT FALL OFF THE EDGE!" Point is that scientists aim to disprove their theories, and measure their hypotheses and as far as possible objectively measure their viewpoint. We don't know what might turn up in future studies of course, which is what makes it so intriguing, be it right or wrong its a far more humble approach than stating that via one text the entire scope of metaphysics was done and dusted "cos it was god wot don it". We should instead pray that Gabby scores 10 goals in all of our remaining fixtures and if that happens I'll consider my belief in god. Hell if that happens I'll become a vicar.
