This is the obvious solution to lot of complaints!!

however… the badge will no longer contrast well on the shirt. it’s tricky a juggle to get right

Also no star and no 1874 which fans voted for in the 2023 consultation.

If you're having a claret badge on a claret shirt, may as well have a standalone lion and text.

Some would say not enough blue.

That’s a solution too. But then it moves in to the realms of being a “logo” what’s also a no from some fans

design isn’t easy

I like that but on a claret shirt it wouldnt show very well

So it pretty much appears unleashed, which is what a lot of people want anyway. Elsewhere, it has our unique crest shape.

20 for the fans to vote on ? That would im afraid be a disaster.

It would be so messy it was hard enough between 2 than having 2o to choose from!

Im not having a go at you by the way as i understand why you feel this way but i think its not for fans to decide its for the people in charge to do what they think. As long as its not a complete rebrand like that awful leeds one years ago. You arr never going to find a crest everyone loves. Some one will always hate it.

Im done with all these new crests now tbh. It just feels we are changing so regularly now. I was happy with this one and wish we never changed it. Loved it.

I think if 20 were put forward then there would be a clearer indication of which ones are the standout quality designs. Kind of like a studio album. An artist will always know which four or five songs they will be releasing as singles.

Agree with you that it isn't for fans to decide but I do believe that they should feel involved in some manner. By the club offering a selection for fans to vote on, they are giving them an elusion of choice. Especially if the choice of the majority of fans match the preferred option of the owners.

What is producing awful crests are surveys. Questions like "Would you like the European cup victory represented by a star?" Or "Would you like 1874 to be located on the crest?" People mark yes but when they see how the club have adhered to their responses, people inevitably say " Well, that wasn't how I meant for them to do it. That looks rubbish."  That happened to me with the star back in 2007 and I have hoped they would remove it ever since.

2 options presented to fans from survey answers is not enough to produce a quality crest. I do believe a design competition can find a gem to polish up though.

And don't worry. I never took your reply as anything like having a go. Just a fellow fan with a different opinion. 👍

Some might say not enough blue. The new badge has barely any claret and that’s our primary club colour.

As for the contrast on a claret kit, I’m sure there’s scope for altering for when it’s on the shirt. If Everton can do a blue silhouette on a yellow shirt, ignoring the rest of their badge, I reckon we can add a gold trim around the edge to help it stand out more.

My bigger issue with it is the Aston Villa font & the text being under the lion to stretch the shield. Either have it above or outside the shield  Makes it look like West Ham's but perhaps this is what works best for marketing or manufacturing.

As with the 5-0, I'll moan and be angry for a while before likely getting over it and buying a shirt regardless of the w@nk badge. We've had some awful sponsors and still bought the shirts so guess this will be similar 😢

Absolute clowns.

This is trash, all due respect. Claret and blue striped background, what were they thinking?

It's not great. It's much better than this drop shadow disgrace.

Drop Shadow FC.

Fk me that's embarrassing. I'm a graphic designer with over 30 years with a specialising in branding and I simply would never put my name to a logo with predominant early 90's drop shadow on a logo.

It's amateur.

Well as a graphic designer maybe you should be aware that most of the western world is reliving the 90's including fashion, music and culture so not that crazy that the badge has some throw back elements to it.

It looks fine. Its not horrible enough to worry about and not amazing enough to salivate over.

A reminder that the original Lerner badge was the result of a fan consultation and a series of votes, and ever change since has been the result of either a vote or significant fan pressure for the badge to be different in some way.

A shield won a fan vote in 2007. I'm don't remember the ins and outs of the Lerner fan vote, but IIRC, we were effectively voting for elements. Those elements were effectively put together into something that didn't quite work. And if we hold the club to the most recent fan vote moving forward, we'll end up with something that doesn't work again because we'll be shoehorning together elements that were voted for for different reasons in different contexts.

The new badge is a misguided attempt to fix the common criticisms of the Lerner badge under financial constraints that have, as far as I can tell, dictated  that we can't change the lion because it's plastered all over the stadium and the costs are too great to replace it. It seems to be just hubris from Heck dictating that we didn't just go back to the Lerner badge, but I think that stems from Heck recognising that there was a strong dissatisfaction with the Lerner badge and an appetite for change.

We probably need to give it a few years to let the dust settle on this badge, and ultimately it'll be fine. It won't make us look ridiculous, the majority of the Villa supporterbase will be generally positive about it. It won't look significantly different on the shirt from the Lerner badge. This will all happen again in few years, and I for one look forward to the new Villatalk thread! We just need to make sure that we don't make our next process another design by committee.

I loved it 😂but this goes to show the challenges you have when you leave it to the fans. One person likes it the other doesnt. Ill probably dislike the one you liked best.

I think there is some valid points there for example they could havw asked how do you feel about the star being there? How do you feel about lion facing opposite direction. Maybe ask 5-6 questions and which ever answer was most popular then base the design on the answer. Thats probably what would work but if you give people a choice of choose between varioua designs you will still moanong and some would say they are all crap and you get nowhere.

I think they have made their decision now so looks like this one is here to stay for a few years

Seems a strange launch image - but it's here, it's us from now on and we best start to try to develop some sort of fondness for it.

I quite like the white bits - the 1874 and the little rope line around the edges.

I love it, it looks great. Can't wait to buy the new kit.

We always seem more successful with a round badge so for that reason alone I say screw the shield designs!

Not that I disagree exactly, but many seem to forget after winning the European Cup there was also a period where we were largely rubbish and ultimately got relegated, all with a round crest.

It's almost like the shape of a crest doesn't dictate how good we are, and as is human nature we sometimes just like to remember the best bits.

I accept that a round crest is something some fans will always want, but from a branding perspective, at the moment, it's overused in our market and so it's a sub-optimum choice at this time.

In fairness, it's totally different to any other badge in the League and instantly recognisable.

It's 100 percent an improvement on the Lerner badge.

Wouldn't necessarily be my choice, but I feel it will all come together nicely.

In fairness, a ‘💩’ would be very different and instantly recognisable as a badge but those criteria doesn’t make it any good.

Heck has screwed up!  Awful from a supposed branding expert…

Actually in those two terrible seasons, 85-6 and 86-7 we were wearing the hideous henson kit without a badge... Returned to the round badge for the promotion season (87/8) and then finishing second under GT in 1989-90 (and still had the round badge when we finished second in the first premier league season under BFR)... 😁
