Race for Champions League - 2023/2024

I love the comments from Spurs manager that they have not been positive lately, and he blames himself for it.

The same goes for us in a way. Unai talks about being brave, but our worst games have come when he has set up the team negatively.

Positivity is the way to win things. We're not quite there yet, but getting closer.

It's been asked before, but if we end up qualified in 4th by Monday Morning will Emery go all out or bust with our best side against the greeks

I think he’s going to do that anyway.

For a bit of outside interest to distract from the Blues relegation party, if Arsenal win today it's almost impossible for the title race to be decided by the time Tottenham -play Man City - only if the latter lost their two games before that, against Wolves and Fulham.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. The people posting things like "Thursday doesnt matter as long as we win at the weekend" or equivalent make me feel slightly dead inside.

I never thought our fanbase would lower themselves to that kind of attitude. This season has been a wake up call in that respect. I guess all fanbases have those kind of fans but for some reason, I didnt think we would.

We have a fantastic record against Brighton. Liverpool maintain a fantastic home record. Neither game is a certainty. We know the variables in football mean the above doesn’t always count. But despite giving away some silly goals, we did show fight in a freakish game. I remain confident in us getting a result tomorrow. Regardless of what Spurs do. It’s been in our hands for most of the season and nothing changes tomorrow. Yes, we miss critical players, feel the tiredness of the extra fixtures, but Unai will keep demanding. We are an excellent footballing side - one that is also capable of mistakes and losing games - but the lessons we will learn from it will carry into next season with improvements and new recruits to help us keep growing. It doesn’t erase the frustrations, but recognises that the speed of our growth is still remarkable. Especially with losing key players across positions at critical times of the season.

Lowering themselves?

dead inside?

The problem is football today because money makes such a difference to clubs being able to compete.  To be involved in CL football benefits the club long term and remain competitive.  Winning a cup is fantastic and ideally I would want both but I’m 51% CL place, 49% ECL.

You need to blame football generally that money is made mainly from one competition and is one of the very few ways to remain competitive….we understand that not getting CL means more chance of losing one of our top players where it is unlikely unless we want to if we get CL.

It’s a sad indictment on football so you can’t blame the fans that realise the situation and argue for CL over the ECL.  We would love to be traditional and focus on only winning a cup but we understand the realities of modern day football.

Absolute bollocks. We want to make more money and keep our best players for what? What's the end game? The goal at the end of the day? Winning trophies.

Tottenham have been in the CL a lot recently, even reached a final. How does history remember this period for them? Failure. How will their fans remember it? Unable to get over the line. Always the bridesmaid.

If you ask every Newcastle fan whether they could have won the League Cup last year and finished 5th or losing the final and bombing out of the CL as they did. What do you think they would say? 99.9% would take the trophy, obviously. It's like some Villa fans have lost their minds. I have just given examples, recent ones in this very league and still I hear this same old shit. It's a sad indictment you're right. But of certain fans, not football.

Securing UCL the same weekend Small Heath finally get flushed down the drain into League 1 mediocrity will be quite a pleasant experience

It's probably not going to past Sunday evening anyway, but that Arsenal win means City only need a point against Wolves or Fulham to guarantee that the title race is yet to be decided when they face Spurs.

Nah, bruh.

I care about the long term financial stability and success of Villa over anything else. Champions League is the next leg up.

Of course I care about the cup - those saying it is meaningless are wrong. But gun to head, I pick making CL all day.

But I'm still rooting for both!

Has winning the ECL helped West ham kick on, or Sevilla after winning the EL 3 years on the trot?! Winning a minor trophy is good for fans to celebrate, but has little effect on progressing the club long term.

I can't tell if you're being serious or not. No West Ham haven't "kicked on" but they won a trophy that will last forever. Their first one in 40 years. That's what matters.

As for Sevilla, they are world renowned as UEFA Cup/Europa League specialists. The all-time most wins. For a club like, La Liga dominance or even one win is almost impossible. They have achieved something beyond their wildest dreams.

I genuinely cannot believe I have to explain this to people. It boggles my mind. You sound completely insane to me.

Well, if you ask me what’s more important - getting into champions league or winning some Mickey Mouse cup that West Ham won last year…

How many Mickey Mouse cups have we managed to win in the last 28 years? How will we fare in the Champions League if we get smashed 4-2 at home to the 5th best team in Greece?

What exactly is it about Aston Villa's recent years that gives the brass neck to have that spoilt brat entitlement? What have our fans become? A couple of good seasons and look at some of us.

The simplest solution here is to both qualify for the Champions League and win the Conference League.

We'll likely have Pau, Tielemans and Martinez back by the 2nd leg: if we already have CL in the bag then we can go all out knowing we have nothing to play for in the remaining 2 Prem games.

We will not agree on this, I understand your point of view somewhat, it should not unreasonable for you to see why some fans feel 4th is more important by a small margin at this pivotal moment in our progression.  Our manager seems to agree as well.  You obviously feel different, that’s no reason to question our reasoning.

I understand where you are coming from, but winning trophies without the financial muscle to compete at the top is pointless. Has winning the ECL helped West ham kick on, or Sevilla after winning the EL 3 years on the trot?! Competing for titles and major trophies is the end game and the only way to do that is to increase revenue exponentially through the CL.

Thank you ! Fans need to understand this , and for the fans that are dying to see us winning any little thing then i hope for you it happens but some of us know what the ins and outs and therefore not all concerned with the ECL, now we need to play our role and support the team until the very end of the season.

We’ve won the Europeans Champions Cup why would we drop down to glorify winning this thing ?
