Maybe, but we would have a squad to cope you'd hope.

Has that been Newcastle's experience?

You could say Newcastle have been unlucky with injuries this season, and I'd agree with that, but qualifying for the Champions League did not suddenly magic a new squad into existence. They spent a good chunk of money on Sandro Tonali, Harvey Barnes and Tino Livramento. It's hardly transformational.

This is the point that @LondonLax has been making, people are expecting too much to change from CL qualification.

But its all down to money as sad as that is. And does getting into the champs league bring in more money than a FA cup final cup run?

Probably.

Probably?  It’s around £40-50 million more to qualify for Champions League compared to winning the FA Cup.

To be really transformational we need to qualify for it 2-3 years in a row like Spurs did in the mid 2010s.

I think we'd have a Newcastle type season even if we make it this year next season.

Dropping into europa league while Emery is here wouldn't be that much of a disaster given how good his record is in that competition and winning that is another avenue into CL.

Watching Arsenal here reminds me just how far we’ve got to go. Emery is working miracles but they’re miles better than us.

People slagging us off on this thread for actually beating Arsenal because we were clinging on or whatever.

Today shows what a fabulous result that actually was especially as we put so much into the Man. City game less than 72 hours before.

Don't sound too happy now please

Clearly not about being ‘happy’ is it. But it’s still a joke or an idea to even consider at this point. We are dreadful.

Can close the tread now. What's worst about this was we could have just had a normal season and ended 6th or 7th and we'd be happy. Now it's just failure we can feel like the MON days

That's the big problem that remains for us as a club really.

We're a better footballing team than Man. United. We showed that for about 80% of the game.

However they hung in there somehow and while likes of Diaby and Luiz were wasterfully screwing shots wide at 1-1 they produced the cross of the game and won it.

We can never shake off the feeling no matter how much we spent that we're not quite good enough to achieve things at a crucial part of the season.

It's an inferiority complex we can't quite kick the habit of. Was there in the MON seasons and looks like this season is going to turn out a replica of 08/09 which will be even more crushing.

Some perspective - we actually played well. We are mentally incapable of beating Man Utd. Play like that in our upcoming games and we remain in the running.

We lost…

We're still 5 points ahead of them and with better goal difference. This result is very bad, there's no getting around it, but it was hardly unlikely and we're still involved. At least there were signs of improvement in the performance today.

Lots of work for Emery to do though, the danger of choking completely is very real.
