Five Things a Real Villa Supporter Must Do Before They Die ...

As someone who has

  • Been born into a Villa Family
  • Been to Villa Park numerous times
  • Watched a game in each stand at the ground
  • Watched the players train at Bodymoor Heath
  • Owned a season ticket in the Holte End
  • Been to Blues vs Villa game
  • Owned several replica shirts
  • ...and numerous other things I don't have time to list...

I can tell you that absolutely none of those things make me a 'proper' Villa fan, or more of a fan than anybody else. Supporting Aston Villa is a life long commitment to hope and disappointment, to be a proper fan in my opinion, all you have to do is care, hurt when we lose, feel joy when we win. Nothing else matters, not age, race, gender, religion, sexuality, nationality .etc All are welcome, and no one fan is 'better' than any other.

You don't have to go to Villa Park to be a part of that.

So my list would read.

  1. Support the club
  2. Support the team
  3. Support the players
  4. Hold the club accountable to the standards it represents
  5. Be cool to each other

Peace out.

I like that list. I'd  add "cultivate  a sense of gallows humour for when it all goes a bit Ross McCormack"

Have a pint in town.

Mate

I want to know more about this.  As a plastic Irish fan I've had many pints in town while wearing a Villa shirt. Should I not have done?

I have another criteria.

  • Pissed all over the floor in the Railway end at the shit ground. Throwing up is acceptable, having a dump is legendary. I've done neither of the last two may I add.
  • Been escorted onto a train at an away ground by the old bill and sent packing, for being ridiculously intoxicated.
  • Sat in the home end at an away ground and put on a local accent. Even if a crap one and kept your composure.
  • Phoned up WM and called them w****** down the phone. Mate.

Anyone of these gets you the best fan ever tag.

As usual, you lot take my questionable topic and turn it into something way funnier and more questionable than I ever dreamt. Too funny. So many memorable answers.

This isn't one everyone must do, but it was a great experience for a Villa fan...

I signed up to do the big sleep out at Villa Park with Shaun Teale. We slept as a group in the Trinity Stand concourse to raise money for charity.

It was one of the first ones, so not much interest and a small group. We were given stadium tours that were more off-beat than the usual which was nice, especially with Shaun Teale adding his stories as well.

But the best but was getting up in the morning and sitting in the stand watching the sun rise over the Villa Park pitch*. Awesome.

(*It was actually being dug up for some new undersoil heating but let's not take away from the moment)

  • Strong City
  • Scuba Steve
  • Susan Coffey
  • Scatman Voinjama
  • Morpheus' Aunt
  • Winter Olympic Catfishing
  • Joe Bennett's Sister

....forget not

Not sure what's odd.

A real Villa Supporter, as opposed to, you know, David Cameron.

I know exactly where you are coming from and he's far from popular in the country, or even in his own beleaguered party just now, but all of that aside and only looking at the Villa issue in isolation: It was his speech writer that caused this West Ham confusion for him, he has been to see us play, has also taken his son to see us and his uncle played a crucial part in dragging our club out of the doldrums, so he still counts as one of our "celebrity" followers in my opinion (he's even got a shirt;)).

For what it’s worth when I first visited the Barton Arms before a game, I did have a weird sense of “this is where supporters traditionally go to have a drink before and after a game”.

I don’t know if that’s fair or accurate and maybe that tradition is now being replaced by the much closer Aston Tavern (which is a different kind of beast, but I like it).

But I think if someone has the chance to go to the Barton Arms when visiting Villa Park, they should.
