Villa’s Race for Europe 22/23

We could beat Liverpool today, but if Brighton and Spurs win we wil be in the exact same position as if we'd lost to Liverpool and Brighton and Spurs also lost their games, or we could draw with Liverpool and if Spurs and Brigton lose then we would be in a better position than if we'd beat Liverpool and Spurs and Brighton had also on.

Essentially we just need one of Brighton, Liverpool or Spurs to drop points to leave us with a reasonable chance of getting Europe going into last day of the season, of course better if we can do it by beating Liverpool ourselves, but that's not the only way.

Obviously not our season, Kane scores a top corner free kick for first time in a decade.

Didn't really need Spurs getting an early goal in this I'm afraid as they can open Brentford up now on the break.

Can't wait until he leaves them as then finishing above Spurs becomes much easier.

Brentford are looking like a team that could still get a result. They won't of course because there's a curse on us, but they look like they could

Not our season? We were 16th when Emery took over. The face were even in with a chance in the penultimate game is a miracle itself.

In last few weeks I meant? Liverpool coming out of slumber to win 7 straight although given what they've done in last few years that probably shouldn't have been a huge shock.

Getting close or above Brighton and they beat all of Chelsea, Man. United and Arsenal.

Spurs had that really poor result v Bournemouth but since then they've beaten Brighton, Palace and well on their way to beating Brentford at home.

Of course the higher up the table you go the more teams win but last season West Ham finished 7th and ended the season with 2 wins in 10 and Man. United basically chucked the end of season in. They finished 6th in the end on 58 points. We could still finish 8th on 63 points.

Agreed. Will be gutted to miss out on Europe but Gerrard squarely to blame.

Brentford are still well in this game. They are solid at the back and always carry a threat from set pieces. A draw here is very possible and it would be a great result for us. Still plenty to play for guys. This is going to go right to the end of the season.

The wolves result has absolutely **** us

No it hasn’t, the recent form has been fantastic in 2023.  We are always going to lose a game here or there, even the best do even in fantastic runs of form.

The Gerrard era “**** us” as you put it.

Gerrard **** us. But it was in our hands until the Wolves game, now it’s not. Wolves result will cost us Europe.

Nope, we were on a phenomenal run that was never sustainable.  The timing of that result sucks and that’s why people overreact on that game.  The points per game over that period was crazy.  If that same result against Wolves happened 3 games before, nobody would be commenting.  Yes we had Europe in our control but we were never going to continue winning something like 12 games on the trot until the end of the season.  It’s not the Wolves game that cost us Europe it was starting so far behind because of Gerrard.

It is however both remarkable and odd how his (Toney's) ban kicks in just at the crucial moment to help Spurs's European push is it not? The old top 6 protection racket in full swing? Dodgy pennos & everything going on for Spurs! Talk about a helping hand. Whether he would've been out injured or not who knows but the timing is impeccable however you look at it. Why would you not just wait until all the games are over to start the ban?

Anyhow it was a tall order anyhow & whatever happens I am proud of the club at the moment. It still kind of goes to the last day provided Spurs don't' win by more than the odd goal & ditto our result at Liverpool. If we can keep that goal difference close we have an outside chance regardless.
