Villa’s Race for Europe 22/23

No chance of champions league. Newcastle, Man Utd and Spurs have the points and Brighton have more points, 2 games in hand and the form as well. Too many variables even if we are near faultless. I do think we could push for 6th though!! I’m delighted we have teams around us - more chance to make up serious ground!

The thread was actually started by a suspected Leeds fan who started the thread as a joke to wind up Villa fans 😬

Now who’s laughing 😀😀

Where is Messi11? Just realised I haven’t seen him for a while!

Hand up when this thread went live I laughed. After the mess Steven made top 7 was fairy tales and unicorns. Now if we don't get Top 7 I'll be shattered. UTV!!!

Even if we don't, this turnaround has been a tonic. A shot of penicillin to kill the Gerrard infection. This is fun. We can hope and dream and that's what it's all about!

4 step plan to finish in top 7 this season:

1 - Lose to Forest

2 - Sack Gerrard

3 - Hire a competent manager

4 - Profit (top 7)

Well, 2 and 3 were right. 1 was a couple of games early. Let's see if 4 happens.

Nottingham Forest is a must win. Looks like we might be playing them possibly with a new manager in.
Our European place rivals have some really tough games this GW. I wouldn't mind Brighton beating Spurs and bringing them closer to us.

Brentford vs Newcastle
Liverpool vs Arsenal
Spurs vs Brighton
Wolves vs Chelsea

You’re probably right but no harm in daring to believe. At least until we got bought back to Earth with defeats against Leicester and Forest ;)

Nah, we’ll smash them both!!

Mmmmm 😝

If Brentford lose to Man utd and Newcastle, Brighton lose away to Spurs, and we beat Forest then we will go sixth.

I think Brentford will probably beat Newcastle though, but that woudn't be the worst result for us as then would be just three points behind Newcastle if we can beat Forest.

Forest a big game really, because teams around us all playing each other, so as long as we can win we're going to close ground on some of them.

Newcastle play West Ham tomorrow so could be 9 points clear if they win.

Our first priority needs to be trying our hardest to hold onto 7th, that in itself will be difficult enough.

I feel people easily get carried away.

Lord knows if we win the next couple on the spin some will be we opening an " Is the Title Mathematically possible " thread. lol

We aren't going to win every game, and the teams with games in hand, and more points aren't going to lose all those.

Anything between 7th - 9th is still outstanding, 10th would still be good even though a little underwhelming after being teased.

But if you consider that we have gotten all the way here from 17th, the perspective is different.

I actually think 8th is realistic.

I'd be equally as happy with a Europa League spot as I would be with a CL one. We've got the Europa League specialist in charge, and winning that is a free pass to the CL group stage anyway.

Are Liverpool still getting 70 + points on one of the predictor's spreadsheets?!

Hopefully Arsenal just play the opponent and not the venue at the weekend and beat Liverpool. If we beat Forest then that's a four point gap on Liverpool which would've seemed near impossible about six weeks back or even after they beat Man. United 7-0.

Important we try to build some breathing space with teams below us. Already it's a 5 point gap to Chelsea in 11th so we're starting to look secure in top 10 at least.

Would be nice to get to sixty points whether that's enough for Europe or not, would be the first time we've achieved that since 2009-2010 season, sixteen points needed from nine remaining games, would take good form to achieve it but looking at the remaining fixtures doesn't look impossible.

Forest (h), Newcastle (h), Brentford (a), Fulham (h), Man Utd (a), Wolves (a), Tottenham (h), Liverpool (a), Brighton (h)

Five winnable games amongst those and then another draw would do it.

The good news is that we don't have to play Arsenal or City again. With the exception of Forest, the other games look hard - and they are - but fundamentally they are against teams who have achieved basically similar points totals as us over the course of three-quarters of a season. We shouldn't be going in to any of them feeling inferior (which is not the same as saying we'll win them all, or even do as well as we'd like, obviously).

This..people forget that the teams above us are not likely to lose their games in hand. They are above us for a reason, they have been better over the season
