What decent player is going to pick us over other options at the moment?

Players hold most of the power today. If they don't like the place they'll just call their agent and request a move essentially. We are looking at a snapshot in time where things feel like shit and saying this is all we are.

It's not quite that bad yet, and I don't think players make decisions based on the sam static snapshot us fans use.

A stat:

Today marks 10 years since Aston Villa last signed a player that was later sold for a profit as both Ashley Westwood and Christian Benteke joined the club.

In that time 68 players have joined, 48 of which have already left. Not one for more than we paid. £590m spent, £420m net.

Carney?

We've got 4 of what you've described at max.

West Ham have blown 182 mill just this window. Those players will be on massive wages.

So i refuse to believe this.

There are other things at play here.

You make it seem like we have 14 players on 350 k per week.

Not sure all of West Ham's new players earn that much or that they have that many over 100k per week. Newcastle now seem to have three players earning over 100k (Trippier, Bruno G, Isak). Villa have quickly gone from 1 player earning over 100k to having 5.

Players sold for a big fee are often a bit younger and not yet on massive wages, that's what clubs pay the transfer fees for -- the value of the registration is higher if the salary is reasonable. Players already on massive wages usually don't command huge fees.

It's gotten us promoted and cemented back in the PL. No easy task as the yo-yo clubs show us season after season. It hasn't pushed us on to Europe but that was never going to be easy given our starting point.

Yes, but you forget that we also got relegated during that period.

During that period of spending we started 6th in the Premier League and then went downhill eventually getting relegated and then getting promoted and becoming a mid-table team.

So £450m spent to go from 6th to 11-14th in the PL.

Isn't their capacity 20k more than ours currently and newer owners who have new owner spending leeway ?

They don't even own their stadium.

I also doubt they are " at capacity " most the time.

Also don't think majority of income comes from Gates.

Didn't think when we signed Coutinho, kamara and Carlos before the window opened we would be in such a poor position looking for scraps to sign and potentially shipping out our better players at the end of the window..

I would imagine the owners are highly reluctant to sign off on big money signings for a manager who's on extremely thin ice.

Remember that time we managed to turn ourselves from finishing 16th to finishing 6th just by signing Gavin McCann and Thomas Sorensen.

Yes! Halcyon days.

And then we signed Mathieu Berson and Eric Djemba-Djemba and that was the end of that brief bump.
