So he was a midfielder converted to a LB then?

Yes, a left sided attacking midfielder converted to a left wing back, which is almost the same thing. I'm guessing you know that's a bit different to a number 8?

Factually incorrect. He wasn't a left sided attacking midfielder.

Nope, didn't know that--can you tell me more?

A left sided attacking midfielder for a no mark Russian team, not the specialist box to box cm that we need. I will respectfully bow out now at the risk of annoying everybody. But this isnt the cm we need, although I'd love him as a guy who can cover several positions.

You don't think a versatile left sided player, who runs up and down the wing all day could play as a box to box midfielder?

Guys, we ain’t signing Zinchenko!!

That's not important anymore. What's now important is whether he is a left back or a midfielder.

Looking on whoscored, Zinchenko seems to have played primarily on the right wing in his breakout season in the Russian Premier League funnily enough but he had appareances in all sorts of positions from attacking mid, left back, right back and of course center mid.

Edit: He went to PSV soon after on loan, but didn't start all that much and then to Man City where he's been primarily utilized as a left back ever since. Based on this evidence, its hard to make the argument that he was primarily a CM before being converted to left back. I think its more likely that he was always a versatile player equally capable of playing multiple positions, but Ukraine found best use of him as a central midfielder whilst City found him more useful as an LB.

Do people know how the full backs at City play? In possession they move into midfield and the 8s join the attacking line. They are the only team who play like that. So if you think of the roles a LB at City plays it's more like how we want our 8s to play.

Zinchenko is a modern day Milner. He can do a job all over the pitch.

He would be a great signing.

But it's not happening, and if it is, my goodness can we do business.

Which is exactly what makes the whole argument even more ridiculous.

You'll have to tell Man City's own website then who describe him as a left sided attacking midfielder on his bio who was converted to left wing back.

He's not the CM we need, or even linked, and that's that as far as I'm concerned. If we could get him as a utility player, happy days, but that wont happen as he'll want to start.

OK, I will send them a quick email now.

That's that--discussion over, folks.

Be sure to tell them that they are "factually incorrect".
