Match Thread: Villa v Leicester

Have they changed the clear and obvious element of using VAR to overturn a decision? There’s no way you can say that it’s a clear and obvious mistake. It’s way too subjective. It’s also a decision that should not be decided on a freeze frame. They should have played it in real time.

Having said that, we have been poor. Big improvement needed in the second half or we will lose this.

Do referees who constantly make bad decisions get fined or anything? Never seems to be any reprimand for bad games they have.

The boys club will come out in force as usual! Blah blah blah by the letter of the law blah blah. Right decision!

Anyone watching the replay in real-time can see the keepr fluff it. 1/10th of a second screenshot all the evidence they need. It's an utter farce.

The referee who made the call should have to explain how and why he made the decision he did in situations like this.

Instead all their pals just close ranks around them and pick up whatever line they can from the rulebook, even if completely out of context, to justify it. Just like the Man City non-offside last season

Nobody seems to have put the full text of the rule up, note the last part in bold italics!

"A goalkeeper is considered to be in control of the ball with the hand(s) when:

  • the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body) or by touching it with any part of the hands or arms except if the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper or the goalkeeper has made a save"

They should never have uttered those words, clear and obvious is a myth

Should have stood, per the rules...

A few people are making this point, but it's wrong, IMO.

These are separate clauses.

the ball is between the hands or between the hand and any surface (e.g. ground, own body)

or by touching it with any part of the hands or arms except if the ball rebounds from the goalkeeper or the goalkeeper has made a save

I don't think it should have been ruled out, but the save exception is intended to allow the player to attack the ball when the keeper is touching it from a save without it being under control
