Yeah, I guessed that halfway through writing it but as I'd already had to resort to bullshit to ignore McLeish I just couldn't be bothered with another edit.

Who was our last manager who had won a domestic league before joining us?  Venglos?

I am discounting Alex McLeish as he's not really a manager.

Di Matteo won the Champions League

I wouldn't say the last 10 months has been an embarrassment, just mediocre. Trending water in the championship was an embarrassment before Smith came in.

The failures stem from the summer when you quite rightly point out we didn't buy a midfielder. It was known Smith was keen on at least two players however our recruitment team failed to bring him in. Lange is more to blame than Smith imo. The reason why we don't have a clear defined way of playing is that we brought in a bunch of players who haven't settled into a side yet.

I don't think u are quite getting the point that is made

I’m going to apply to the “support Gerrard” camp.

(don’t ask me why this gif exists)

I'd give you a like but I am all out of likes and I couldn't find any amusing Gerrard gifs. So please accept this Steven Seagal gif as compensation.

The more I read about Gerrard the more positive I get. I very much hope that he brings his assistants with him. Could be a good combo with them having the in depth knowledge and experience, and then Gerrard with his stubborn winning mentality as manager, and the respect he brings from being one of the best midfielders in modern age. He does come across quite thoughtful, smart and articulate I must say. I also like the idea of playing 4-3-3.

I still miss Dean Smith and feel sad about him leaving, but I'm starting to get a bit excited by Gerrard. It's ok for me if he sees us as a stepping stone to become the next Liverpool manager. In order to get there he I guess he must succeed here. Then after Dean Smith has saved Norwich and gained even more PL experience, he can come back to replace Gerrard and lead us in the Champions League :- )

It would be interesting if DS went to Rangers, then we could see who would do the other person's job the best.

Come on mate. If Stevie G flops at villa it will be "chose the wrong club" - "decline started  before he arrived"

Bit of an overhaul needed though if SG comes in - if - he sticks with 4-3-3 as I understand he has at all times. Target's gonna go, Ings or Watkins are going to be pissed off. Doesn't feel like we are bringing someone in to get the best from the players we have - feels more like we're in a midst of a transitional season, again. Thought those days were over.

Our squad is built for 4-3-3

As Rangers boss Smith would win the league every season there without even trying.

As a club where we are now we've basically got 2 choices.

Bring in a journeyman manager whose been around the block and probably had some success but also had some failures and been sacked a few times.

Bring in a young upcoming manager who could be the next big thing.

It looks like we're opting for the latter which I am pleased about.  Stevie G is not a rookie, he's got a few years under his belt and won a league.  He's probably got the right mix of experience an fresh ideas without being beaten down by this relentless sport yet.

I have to say I'd rather that then an "experienced" manager off the merry-go-round.

It's a bit of a gamble but so is any manager we're likely to be able to get. Steve Bruce was meant to be the safest of appointments, the promotion specialist almost guaranteed to get us up.  There is no such thing as a sure thing in this game.

Let's hope he gives us 3 years of tremendous success before joining his beloved plop.  Maybe then we'll be in a position to attract one of the bigger name managers people are craving.

I'm not really bothered by his plop connection.  I'm of that age group where most hate them but still never totally understood that, if he's our manager I'll back him till he's shown he's shit.
