Oh wise and mighty BOF answer me this:

What is the value of 1/2 of 2/3 of 3/4 of 4/5 of 5/6 of 6/7 of 7/8 of 8/9 of 9/10 of 1,000?

100?

Since when were you BOF?

Ah but you see mike I was asking a question not answering one. Notice the question mark?

1000 * (9!/10!) = 1000 * (1/10) = 100

Y'see, this is why maths pisses me off. I worked it out the long way and got it right.

But there's obviously some clever way of doing it using that tricky bit of jiggery pokery you've just posted - and it may as well be in Chinese to me.

! means factorial... 1! = 1, 2!=1*2, 3!=1*2*3, etc. (in general n!=n*(n-1)!, as long as n>1). n!/(n+1)! is 1/(n+1) because every factor in n! is repeated in (n+1)! and can thus be cancelled out.

  • 4 months later...

If the Villa were to offer Nigel Reo Coker a new contract with a goalscoring bonus of £52m a goal, what would happen first; us going bankrupt for giving Reo Coker more money than we can possibly hope to generate, or Reo Coker dying of old age?

It was quicker to work out the 'long way' than the apparent quicker way!

Do the first one...9/10...900, see the pattern straight away, 100. Done in about 10 seconds.

Erm... recognizing the factorial is recognizing the pattern...
