I distinctly remember someone on the internet about 15 years ago on Last FM suggesting to me that I stop taking music suggestions from Pitchfork. I genuinely had no idea what it was.

I've got 6 of them.

Not really my era or sphere of interest. As for lyrics... "Smoke on the water...blah" is about all I know, not really a lyrics person. SOTW isn't really a Deep Purple song that I like either.

I’m not keen on it either, but it made them huge at the time. Pretty dumb guitar work for someone of Blackmores capabilities , but the simplicity of it makes it what it is. Bit like Iron Man with Sabbath , although I prefer that more. Dumb riff and lyrics, mind.

p.s Frank Zappa was a huge Sabbath fan.

What are some studio recorded songs/albums where the production really captures the live vocal sound? Where you feel like you're in the room with them?

Trying to think of some examples to explain what I mean... stuff like Surfer Rosa by the Pixies, or the little gang vocal section towards the end of Feel the Love by Rudimental. A lot of old school hip hop nails this sound as well... very natural sound with a big of room echo and you get that feeling that there's a lot of space in the mix, if that makes sense?

Surfer Rosa is a particularly good example. In/Casino/Out by At the drive in, and and a lot of Albini's Shellac stuff.

The Troggs seem to be a tiny bit on the cheap side at £200. There’s a few bands priced higher on there that I haven’t heard of.

The bottom three are the only ones I've never heard of, but then this was very much my era. I've seen a lot of them.

I was just browsing the Rough Trade post-Xmas sale and there are some bargains to be had in the Vinyl

Primal Scream - Give Out But Don't Give Up - The Original Memphis Recordings Triple album, reduced from £50 to £30

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis - Carnage, reduced from £28 to £18

BBC Radiophonic Music - BBC Radiophonic Workshop, re-issue of the 1968 debut for fans of Library Music, reduced from £23 to £13 (there's another 1973 release similarly reduced)

Laura Marling - Song For Our Daughter - The Rough Trade exclusive edition reduced from £23 to £13. The bog standard version is still for sale at £20

There's plenty of Jazz standards with a couple of quid off (£15 to £13 for example)

Moon Duo - Circles - The Rough Trade version is reduced from £25 to £15 the standard green version is reduced from £22 to £20

Moon Duo - Mazes - Rough Trade Version again, reduced from £25 to £15, standard version also reduced by a few quid

Another of my albums of this year, Liminanas / Laurent Garnier - De Peculia, Rough Trade version which includes the free 7" (long gone elsewhere) rduced from £33 to £19

SOme of the titles in the sale have already sold but there's definitely some bargains to be had and something for everyome

DubVendor are doing 10 vinyl albums for £20

But they just chuck 10 poor sellers in and won’t even guarantee they’ve all got covers!

Still, I guess as a gamble, if there are 2 or 3 that are ok from the 10 then you’re quids in.

They’re doing 10 12” singles, or 25 7” singles or 10 albums for £20 and to paraphrase from the website: lots of it is reggae from the 90’s, some R&B, some Soca, so probably not for everyone.

Probably not for everyone. I think legally, they’re well covered there.
