Does anyone genuinely think they are going to go back on their original ruling?

I'd have thought the overtaking issue would have been the easier one to hide behind, a simple 5 second penalty putting Hamilton first.  If they uphold Mercedes's appeal on the other issue, wtf do they do?

That would still swing races massively. If you’d just pitted and there was a safety car you’d be screwed.

conversely if you weren’t allowed to pit under a safety car, anyone who had just pitted would get a massive advantage. It’s a tough situation to resolve.

Maybe set a 22 second time penalty for pitting based off the times at the point of the incident? Or 14 or whatever the estimated advantage is. That affects the grid at the restart.

The only thing I'm thinking is that they surely can't just go back to lap 57 and be like that's it. Max loses a world title through no fault of his own, then you've got both Alpha Tauri drivers who lose positions through no fault of their own.

This is extremely unlikely but what's to say Max wouldn't have still caught Lewis? Very very unlikely but you know.

Whatever happens now this is going to drag on for months right until the start of the new season.

When Max pitted, wasn't he behind Hamilton with none of the cars between them?  That would have been a race to the line but they gave it up to put new tyres on.

Yep, the race wouldn’t have been so easy for him then. They made the decision to drop back in the pack, they should have had to lie in that bed.

Yeah but anyone that had just pitted wouldn’t need to put again. The 20 seconds they’d lost doing so would be wiped out by the safety car, effectively giving them a free stop and massive advantage.

Yeah but then they’d be ahead if the other drivers pitted. Someone had to lose out in safety cars but this seems a lot fairer to me

No, he had the cars in between and also 10+ seconds behind.
