Penalties should be bread and butter for a striker. Our best penalty taker in several decades was a midfielder 1

Ollie will end up as many goals as his xG like he has over his previous 3 seasons at Villa. He'll get double figures and plenty of assists. He also does superb link up play, is a threat with his pace and has a high work rate. He just needs a goal to kickstart his season. It will come.

He said a striker who is missing chances during a dry spell will more likely than not come good. It’s the anonymous ones that will struggle. Ollie always has chances, as you say. He’ll be okay. The threat of being dropped (we have alternatives now) and the prospect of a new contract will affect him. I reckon he will hit form again. The first paragraph of your post is where I’m at with him. He’s still creating chances he still looks lively .

It feels like every game we say he should have scored, he’s missed chances, etc. Hitting the woodwork isn’t a good effort either, it’s missing the target. He just isn’t good enough. I disagree when you say he isn’t good enough. He’s good enough to play in the premier league and his overall play is still good. What I fear with him is if we dropped him, which I don’t think we should , but how would he handle that? It’s not the first time he’s had to prove himself to some fans at Villa , but he usually answers them and scores .

If we achieve what I want us to achieve as a club this year - top 7 and a cup - then yes Even if he's not scoring himself he's doing his bit in what is a good goalscoring attack

Sorry I'll pretend Ollie's perfect from now on with no weaknesses Or just try to enjoy wins instead of rushing as fast as you could to criticise a player. Ollie has 5 goal contributions in 7 matches this season and statistically averages a goal contribution every other game over the course of his Villa career. Yes, he should've scored yesterday but he won the pen, we won the match, and we move on to the next one, where statistically he will likely either score or provide an assist.
Rugeley Villa
He’s scored 40 premier league goals in 119 appearances. That figure should be higher and if it was he’d be hot property, but that’s a decent strike rate and his overall play also adds to his game.

Clearly the want is for Watkins to take them or he wouldnt have been given ten to take. I was saying last year that I would have McGinn or Douglas Luiz take them after Watkins had missed the first few.
Tomaszk
I didn't see a replay of the ball across from Cash. Could he reach it? I can't believe he didn't dive at it. The Watkins who joined from Brentford throws himself at that. It's the hold-up play drying up that's a big issue for me. He's got to do the ugly stuff or his overall contribution is dropping massively. Honestly, I think he's not happy he hasn't been handed a monster contract. There's a simple way to fix that Ollie. Start scoring and make Villa panic they aren't offering you enough. We aren't an average side like we were when he joined. We're a trophy and European place chasing side. Lift it. Works out around 3.2 goals for the season. Does that match your expectations? 3.2 goals and 12.6 assists. 15 or 16 goal contributions is incredible when he's playing this badly actually yeah. You’re fine with him and it’s just a run of poor form then? I’m failing to see the point you’re making outside of “would you be happy with a striker scoring 3 goals this season?” which is a **** pointless question. Let's call it a day then mate. Have a good one.

Yeah, I think Watkins can definitely reach it. The ball was drilled across, though, he basically just didn't read it coming (or maybe not at that speed? Who knows). Mazrim
OK so here's my thoughts: I love Ollie, he works hard and contributes a lot to our all round game. However: He's not very good at 1 on 1s, his finishing is suspect, he struggles or gets confused to make the right runs when there are players alongside him. He's not really an instinctive striker in the box. Like I say, he has a lot of great qualities, but these things frustrate me. I still love him and want him in the team / squad.

However, he does also win a crucial penalty and his general play helps bring others into the game. He also seemed to get in Zaniolo’s way at some point. There’s enough to criticise whilst recognising the great things he brings to the team. It was more like zaniolo being greedy getting in his own way. There was one time in the first half where zaniolo, Watkins and Diaby were countering and had zaniolo just laid it in to Watkins he'd have been free for the cutback and Diaby could have gone back post and we'd have had a real goal scoring opportunity. Instead zaniolo went it alone and got his shot blocked.
