I watched the first half and thought he played quite well--used the ball really well.

Where did he play out of interest? Was he still a number 6 like he is for us or is he further forward?

He played 6 with Fabinho. I'd be interested to see the stats but I reckon he had a 100% pass completion rate in that first half and some of them were decent forward balls, not just meaningless side to side.

City buyback clause expired June 6th. He's fully a Villa player now

I know. I meant two years of speculating on here that they wait to take him on a free. It was meant in jest due to how this thread has often been over the last year or so.

No because that's not his job. That's what McGinn should be doing. Luz is a not a ball watcher - why do you always want to do him down by comparing apples to oranges?

For what it's worth re: the comparison, Luiz actually has better defensive stats than Sanches anyway. More tackles, interceptions, blocks and clearances than him per 90. Sanches is a great player but it's the other side of the game where he excels.

You're preaching to the converted mate - I rate Luiz.

I think this will be the season where we see Douglas shine to become a £60m player.

The point has been done to death but with a dedicated, specialist DM next to him he has the potential to become a really fantastic player for us.

Sanches was a flop on loan at Swansea. He got better. Luiz will get better

Then Fine.

Sanches did get better.

Luiz to get better.

Which side of the game?

I'm going by what I see.

and that's exactly what I want, but the mere fact you have said that, suggests its not happening i.e last season.

You watch Lille and Sanches a lot?

Fwiw he missed almost half the season due to injuries and played at both RM, LM, ACM & CM when he did play. And it was much of the same the season before that up until the season was abandoned.

so what do you see him as a CDM...CM or CAM.

I think we have comments being made of what we want him to be not what he is....

Douglas passes the ball well, he does not win the ball well, or stop the opposition with any conviction....Now if he improves on that fine, but someone has to do the job of stopping the opposition with aplomb.

Doug for me is not a natural when it comes to winning the ball and in the box, he is a penalty waiting to happen.

I sincerely hope he improves on that, if he does ,we will then have a fine player.

have you been watching Sanches of Portugal....plays for Lille( looks like Edgar Davids).....not just a DM as such, but rats in the middle of the park....thats what we need.

It is exactly what we need but IMO not in place of Dougie. I've been saying this for I don't know how long. Win the ball further up the field and Luiz at DM will shine. You see how Jorginho, a player largely ridiculed when he came to England, plays for Italy when the players up the pitch put pressure on the oppostion. He still does a fair bit of winning the ball back himself, as Dougie also does, but the team don't wait until the opposition are 40 yards from goal to engage and therefore it is easier to win the ball back in the DM position as the opposition are rushing their passes under pressure and can't be as precise.

And this is what I think that Dean and co are building towards with signings like Watkins, Buendia, chasing Smith Rowe. Players who are comfortable pressing high.

I see him as one of the two CM positions in front of a specialist DM in a 4-3-3.

No, I don't....I am just going by what I have seen in the Euro's......I am not a scout, so I don't have to exercise due dilligence and watch his every game.

I was merely pin pointing the type of play we are missing......To expand on that by folks who watch his every game and say its a one off, fine, then he is not the player for us.

You can only watch a player from another team, so much......I was merely commenting on the performances he has produced before my eyes.

That's not really a 433. The only time we've really played a specialist DCM, that many on here seemed to be obsessed about, for long period was Whelan in the Championship and usually 4141 and that was because Smith didn't have squad options. I really liked Whelan and thought he did a great job in that role but don't think it's what Smith is looking for in the squad. Double pivot Luiz McGinn or other player either pivot or balanced mid 3

so do I.

but I have been commenting on what he does, and what he has done last season.

as an example......If Jack plays centre back, I will comment on his performance in that role.....not what he is capable of at No10 or 7

so ...... who do you see having the main responsibilty in their function to stopping the oppositions passages of play?

You can call the position any name you want.....but somebody has to be responsible for doing the job.......who is it?

I would imagine that so many folks have so many varing opinions of what they see from midfield players functions, it becomes a minefield.

We have to be clear, what we expect their main function to be.

Ok?

I see him as a CM, in answer to your question.
