Douglas Luiz

Phillips played like that today because England have no specialist box to box midfielders with the exception of Jude Brillingham, whereas we have Ramsey, McGInn, and Sanson who can all play that role, all of whom are will be ahead of Luiz for any kind of attacking midfield role.

Jesus, Neymar, Richarlison. Such an underwhelming frontline.

Is Richarlison seriously their main number 9? How far they have fallen.

Remember when they had Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Rivaldo?

I'd assume of them 3 Jesus would be the number 9. Well tbh both of them will probably play as strikers whilst Neymar is given a free role.

Still tho. Pretty shitty generation of players wouldn't you agree?

Wouldn't even make my top 10 favorites list to win the World Cup. Which is a pretty crazy thing to say when talking about Brazil

Just like Club football, these things kinda go in cycles I guess.

Also possibly due to the rest of the world catching up ( caught up ) technically, they can't  win games of pure skill or individual brilliance, like in the old days.

Mount has played at 8 for Chelski and Jack has played there for us.

Luiz could play there in a 4-3-3 with McGinn or Sanson playing as the second 8/quasi-10 (the furthest forward of the two 8's).  I think, if we are seriously interested in JWP, we will probably play 4-3-3 and there will be four players competing for the 2 x 8 roles (although see speculation that Sanson may not be long for the Villa).

I hope that Ramsey gets a loan to a top Championship side so we can, hopefully, see him getting a good volume of games over the next 12 months.

He doesn't, he has a house now. He was training in his garden during lockdown so I assume he wasn't one of the ones with COVID.

I think he will be a lot better next season when he can look up and potentially see Grealish/Buendia/Traore as options rather than Trez/El Ghazi/Ramsey. I'd prefer to see Sanson with him as well over McGinn in the games we expect to win, I think he's got better ball control and retention, we will see.

People seem to think half our squad had serious form of covid during the two week break. How come our 11 barely changed for 4-5 games straight after that break? Only one you could say had it for sure was Trez given it was sort of confirmed and we eased him back in with sub cameos (he also was injured anyway around that time).

You could also make a case for Barkley given he didn't look right at all but again he played pretty much every minute of the games up to early Feb so why were we playing players for 90 minutes every 3 days if they were dead on their feet, dosen't add up.

Trez tore his hamstring in December.

But 11 first team players and staff had covid. And either wya they didn't have access to proper training facilities for 2 weeks. If you don't think that has a massive effect on a players performance, I don't know what world you are living on.

I thought it was facial injury with Trez in December and then he got covid in the outbreak.

No I'm far from in denial about impact with covid but if that was the case....where was the rotation with the team after we came back? I mean Steve Bruce is a dinosaur with players fitness generally and yet he had Saint Maximn on the bench for 2-3 games after he declared fit (think it was v us in that January when he came on as 70th minute sub). We also eased Jack back into things with two sub appearances after his 3 month break.

Just looked at the games again.

Man. City- Newcastle- 3 day gap. 1 change- Nakamba in for McGinn (suspended).

Newcastle-Burnley- 4 day gap 1 change. McGinn in for Nakamba. First sub 83 minute.

Burnley-Southampton- 3 day gap- unchanged team! First sub 89th minute.

Southampton-West Ham 4 day gap- 1 change with El Ghazi in for Traore.

West Ham- Arsenal 3 day gap- 2 changes. Nakamba in for Luiz and Traore back in for El Ghazi. Only two subs used.

6 games in 17 days after covid outbreak and yet very few changes so dosen't quite add up if players really were dead on their feet at hour mark yet were remaining on the pitch until just before the end. We had Gulibert still at the club I think for a game or two so could've given him some starts if Cash was one of those impacted for example.

Ollie looked really sharp after the break compared to the xmas games so he's one that actually benefited from the rest.

I'm sure the Sports scientists guys would've been doing endurance tests at Bodymoor and checking the running stats during games so this would've all been relayed to Dean.

We played 24 players but of them played for a combined 60 minutes. One of them went out on loan in Jan. The other was signed in Jan. So really that is only 18 players. And to be honest a lot of them just aren't good enough such as elmo or barkley.

We played like 15 or 16 players all season and 2 of them played for a combined 35 minutes. Smith evidently doesn't trust the squad.

Yes I know but just seems mental to me if sports science guys and the club doctor were saying to him, "Dean a few of the players have been impacted with covid so make sure you sub a few of them off from 60 minute mark. And also make sure you rotate 3-4 every 3 days for next two weeks just to manage minutes" etc. I can't believe he'd just ignore all that because he just trusts about 13 players in the squad. Would be neglecting his duties for player welfare for a start.

Yes results would've dipped.....but they did dip anyway a month later through one injury.

With hindsight now rushing back Barkley from his two month lay off looks a bad call considering the form El Ghazi was in at the time. He's actually one of the ones I suspect was impacted by covid given how lifeless he looked on the pitch post Jan but the blunt truth is he started for us 6 times for us in 17 days.

I messed up my original post. It was actually 24. I was looking up villa stats the other day. I think it was blocked shots and it showed 14 players for Villa which is why I said 14 my bad.

But half of them weren't available in January. And most of them played less than 1000 minutes.

Frankly it was a very bizarre bit of management from Smith not playing el ghazi and trying to play barkley through his terrible run of form which cost us a number of results.
