Recall or no recall? The January options Aston Villa have on their 11 loanees

The transfer window is fast approaching and Dean Smith is putting plans in place to strengthen his squad.

Aston Villa’s head coach has already identified certain areas which need strengthening in the winter market and will work alongside CEO Christian Purslow and sporting director Jesus Garcia Pitarch to ensure that happens.

Also coming into Smith’s consideration will be the host of stars out on loan.

Plenty of players were deemed surplus to requirements by former boss Steve Bruce in the summer, while others were sent out to gain valuable first team minutes.

But which of the current players out on loan can Villa recall in January?

ASTON VILLA FANS HAVE A NEW CHANT AND IT'S BRILLIANT!

Jed Steer (Charlton

Recall? Yes

What’s he said?

“Football goes in different ways and you have got to expect the unexpected. As it stands my contract is up next summer. I just want to have a good year, play as many games as I can and see what happens. It’s all up in the air.”

Tommy Elphick (Hull City)

Recall? Yes

What’s he said?

“Never say never but I’m in the last year of my contract and something would have to change drastically at the top for me to be wanted back.

“The manager gave his blessing for me to go out on loan without many centre-halves in the building so that says all you need to know.”

Contracted until: 2019

Gary Gardner (Birmingham City)

Recall? No

What’s he said?

“I’m delighted to be here. It's a massive opportunity to be here and I can’t wait to get going.

“I need to play games now at 26 years of age. I’ve played a lot of games last year. I’m buzzing to be here. I just want to get out there and give my all for this club.”

Contracted until: 2020

Aaron Tshibola (Kilmarnock)

Recall? Yes

What’s he said?

“I feel I’m playing well. The new manager is in and hopefully the club are watching my games.

“I know I’ve got a clause in January if they want me to come back.”

Contracted until: 2020

The young guns

Villa also have talented quintet Andre Green, Easah Suliman, Jordan Lyden, Mitchell Clark and Kelsey Mooney out on loan but it’s unlikely Smith will exercise his option to recall any of them in January.

While Green has seen his time at Portsmouth interrupted by injury, Clark and Mooney are heavily involved at Port Vale and Cheltenham respectively.

Lyden has just started playing regularly with Oldham but Suliman is still trying to force his way into the picture at FC Emmen.

Down Under duo

Ritchie De Laet and Ross McCormack joined A-League sides Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners respectively and they’re both expected to see out their loan agreements.

Speaking recently, McCormack said of a possible return to Villa Park: “I can't see it, to be honest. That ship's probably sailed, but it's hard to say.

“I've still got another year left after this season, so you can never say never.

“I'd probably be surprised if that changed something for me.”

Kelsey Mooney was an unused sub as Cheltenham won their FA Cup Round 1 replay against Ebbsfleet 2-0, meanwhile Jed Steer wasn't in the Charlton squad as they won their replay against Mansfield Town 5-0.

So a Jan recall for Elphick is possible. Nice. Doesn't say if De Laet recall is possible or not though?

To be honest with you I would just leave it as it is and leave them all where they are.

I'd rather we obtained new faces in January where possible.

We've pulled Suliman from his loan. He'll be back with the U23's until we can find him another one.

An utterly pointless loan move. 9 eredivise minutes he got !! Being a young English centre back trying to get minutes is a thankless task though really. It's a position of such responsibility. Now matter how neat and tidy you are on the ball lower league English clubs won't give you a start there. I think he'll be released in the summer.
