End of the Smith regime / during Gerrard’s - I was giving him pelters. Didn’t think he was good enough.

Well, massive slice of humble pie for me to scoff. Been truly excellent since Emery has come in and long may it continue.

He deserved those pelters, he was unfit, carrying too much weight and trying to do too much and his game was suffering for it. 

Since Unai has come in he's gotten Leaner which has allowed him to be more fit and be a lot more agile and he's playing within a defined tactical role that Unai has provided and he's thriving because of it.

I made a post when we were a championship team, that McGinn's influence was on par with Grealish's.

Even though Grealish at the time was my favourite player in Villas history, I had a feeling that it was swagger and talent that kept McGinn at arms length from Grealish level recognition. 

Fast forward to now, I'm sure there are still some who'd say the money Grealish allowed us is more important to our rise than McGinns on field efforts.

Idk. Personally I think McGinn is by far one of the most successful stories to come from Villa since we last flirted with UCL under Houllier.

I myself and probably many others thought that captaincy was something that McGinn would not be any good at. Because of his joker status. I was wrong. He seems to be everything a captain should be. Someone others want to be around, with a good sense of humour, but also hugely respect and would run through brick walls for. His recent interviews have been gold as he speaks so confidently but with zero arrogance. When he speaks they listen. He has also as a captain improved his game immeasurably. Which shows he has the character to thrive under pressure.

He has been brilliant against Citeh and Arse but there were other games where he really showed his captaincy. 

Away at Wolves where he was the most aggressive player on the pitch in the first half. Because he had spoken about how they get on top early when we play them at the Molipoo. So he single handedly became the most annoying player he could be. Smashed into tackles. Moaned about everything. Never let them get completely on top of us.

Then Fulham where he smashed Paulinha and totally bullied him. Making it impossible for him to influence the game. But as well as the combative end of his game he also did the skillful side as well. Both ways he was a 9.5/10.  Then the Calvin Bassey moment where he held off one of the strongest defenders in the prem. When you see your captain doing things like this it rubs off

I will hold my hand up and say I was thinking exactly this.   Mings will always be the captain and it should not have been taken off him the way it was. However SJM has grown into the role even more since Tys absence and its a joy to see.

John McGinn is probably the most loved Hibs player within the support and the club and has been since he joined 4 years ago. During this time we've seen him develop from a rough diamond with potential to a genuinely top quality midfielder who IMO should be Scotland's first choice midfielder right now.

John's biggest attribute is his spirit, you get these players every so often like your Gerrard's, Schole's etc that have the ability to lift a team and drive them on. John will bring that in abundance, if a game is going against you he will single handedly give everything he's got to drag the team back in to it through grit, determination and fight. On the flipside, if you're winning a game well John has the classy side of his game as well, excellent strength, ability to spray 50 yard passes with ease and a very decent turn of pace.

He also has a wicked left foot on him and the majority of his goals tend to come from drives from outside the box including two 25 yard strikes in a 2-2 draw at Celtic Park last season.

He will dominate the midfield in most games he plays and Scott Brown who's been the Celtic captain for 10 years said last season McGinn was the most difficult midfielder he's ever played against in Scotland.

 

The bigger the game, the bigger the performance you'll get from McGinn and he will never ever be accused of hiding.

 

In my opinion John McGinn will be an English premiership player within 2-3 years whether it be with Villa or another club.

From a Hibs fans perspective Villa would be a cracking move though.

He's done something very few mature (as in in his late 20s) players actually do and that's take his game to another level at this stage in his career. I distinctly remember groaning when he came off the bench during Emery's first game with us because not only had he been pretty poor under Slippy, even under Smith's final years he often didn't look great. He's completely turned it around and although Emery's coaching obviously has played a big part, he still had to take it on board and put it into practice. Mentally, I think he's one of the strongest players we've ever had.

He will go down as a Villa legend, no doubt about it.

I thought McGinn had been a disappointment in the Premier League, he looked like he couldn’t find time and space at this level to bring his game, and with the added burden of Captaincy I expected him to fall into a Dendonker style substitute role or to be sold. But credit to Emery and himself, he has emerged as a Captain by example and upped his game to a new and higher level. That’s some feat and credit to him. His stats are terrific this season, he found his shooting boots too.

I want to see a scientific study on McGinns physiology. The shape, movement and stamina of this man needs to be studied. I can’t think of any other top level footballers that look and move like him. Maybe Mitrovich has that similar build.
