I think we were 4-1 down from first leg and drew 1-1 at VP again if memory serves right Ray Graydon scored our goal. My dad trying to surreptitiously give me some of his half time beer for a drink as he was too much of a tight arse to buy me a soft drink Whilst this was happening immediately behind him I saw what I now know was a proper skinhead being frogmarched by 2 policeman. I just knew he looked like one scary dude. Sitting on my dad's shoulders walking past the old Holte end illuminated by the AV floodlights with a Villa Rosette on my chest, not sure how it got there, I don't remember having it during the match, on my dad's shoulders was the first time I remember having it, I wonder now if someone in the crowd gave it to me. Can you even buy a Rosette now and why were they so popular then? Kept it for years till it fell apart. For some reason the next 3 games which I can properly remember were all against Stoke. Didn't go for years then until I started going with some lads from school. They had been going for a while. I remember being stopped and searched by a copper whilst the lads stood on the stairs behind him cat calling. He just said to me quietly in my ear "just point them out to me son and I will have them" Then I went into a bit of a panic when we headed for the exits after the game as I realised I hadn't got a ticket and worried they might be checking them on the way out. . Weirdo. That was obviously in The old Holte End and undoubtedly turned my support of Aston Villa into the obsession. We won 3-0, Mark Walters, Tony Daley and an Allan Evans penalty sealed the deal. I'll always remember the fact that the attendance was awful for a derby but Villa filled the Smethwick end and I wished I was in there with them, Technically I became a bit of a glory hunter as well I suppose because West Brom were utter dog shit!! I loved that old smethwick end- always generated a great atmosphere- I'm pretty sure the first time I went around 77-78 we used to get the whole terrace and then as time passed we seemed to get fewer and fewer tickets and before you knew it- a big fence and Sandwell fans to our left !
