Gary Thomas
At last - be nice to enjoy watching football again, the odd goal and a win would be an improvement Hopefully things can stat moving now on the transfer front.
PieFacE Posted June 14, 2016 VT Supporter Share Posted June 14, 2016 So do we think that a new owner, new manager, new coaches can bring a new mentality to this football club. First signing now needs to be a new captain, someone who's actually capable of fulfilling the role on and off the pitch

Dr Xia has been informed he passed the owners and directors test and following the competition of paperwork today is now the Club's new Owner and Chairman. I'm questioning the options for redundancies here. The people we need have been sacked yet the deluded, illiterate media team are still here. Hurry up, Xia, we want more sackings! Back on topic, I'm sort of sad to see Hollis go. The takeover, without him, would have either gone to an equally-deluded American or not have happened at all. Things sped up ten fold after his financial prowess came to the club.

The rest of your post, whilst making a sensible point about the difficulties in discussing ethics and morality, seems to make little sense in trying to exempt football from a discussion of ethics because of that difficulty. Why just football (or monopoly or golf)? You've not only argued, in that post, about the difficulty of applying ethics or morality to the arena of football, you've earlier in the threrad claimed that morals do not apply in football thus giving justification to the unethical behaviour that you are happy for the club to participate in: By the way, where does your compartmentalization end? On the pitch? How a club deals with the authorities? What goes on in the stands? How a club treats its staff? How a club treats its fans? How a club is funded? For those who may wonder how on topic this is, I think it's a very valid thing to discuss how far fans are willing for their club (and its new owner(s)) to go in order to try and achieve success. Whether or not the new owners will do any of what fans may hope for we won't know until events unfold. If, however, fans are posting that they claim that there are no morals in football, that morality shouldn't come in to it, that they're not even too worried about doing something wrong as long as we've properly evaluated that wrongdoing or that we should **** morals and they want 'bend ****' to get us to the top doing their thing with regard to the takeover that has happened then it surely is an appropriate thread in which to put any countering opinion that there are fans who would have a problem with that. Wow ! You must have an even emptier life than I do.........but given that several of your points are direct criticisms of my view I have no choice but to reply (just once more). Trying to tackle it in some sort of order... Its a shame you don't appear to have the good grace to accept an apology when it is given. There is no connection between what I apologised for and people being holier than thou. That comment is my opinion on the stance taken by some others and has nothing to do with my other comment. I hope you don't mind if I don't feel the need to only say things you agree with ? Its not that morals 'do not apply' in football, it is that, like everywhere, they are a moveable feast - that is a fact. Micheal Atherton has for some years debated 'the spirit of cricket' for similar reasons. Is there a 'spirit', or are there rules ? Great debate - but not about football itself. A bit like the FIFA saga -there is corruption, money laundering (allegedly), handouts, God knows what......but most of us just watch the matches. I'm not sure I have definitively said I support unethical behaviour - but I would certainly challenge you or anyone else to DEFINE it !! You have No chance. And there is no point. I just don't see what you are after. Neither does anybody else I know. Are you saying that now, out of nowhere, you suddenly (because we have who we have - it cant be for any other reason) you want to examine morality and politics and its relationship to sport, Villa, and the world ? What has brought this on ? This thread was devoid of such stuff until our current Board came along ? You don't want 'football to be exempt' from such debate - yet it has been - mercifully - free from just that debate until, when ? Oh yes, right now. Which pretty much pre-supposes that prior to now you and others had no concerns about ; "where does your compartmentalization end? On the pitch? How a club deals with the authorities? What goes on in the stands? How a club treats its staff? How a club treats its fans? How a club is funded?" All of a sudden you think it makes sense for fans to set their parameters on what would constitute us playing fair. Yet you saw no need for this previously. Did we play fair last year ? How do you know ? Have we ever evaded tax ? How do you know ? Do we ever short change anyone ? Have we ever ? What 'ethics' rules are there ? If we break rules is that a problem ? I saw Neil Young the other night and he DELIBERATELY broke a curfew. He incurred a fine. He knew it was wrong. Would you have had a problem staying to listen ? It was designed to prevent disturbance to others, to assist the Police, God knows what, yet guess what, I didn't just tolerate it, I welcomed it. If we beak FFP because Tony works out we can pay the fine and get up faster - will we be ethically bad ? If that is bending or breaking the rules does it matter ? Do you ever park illegally and accept the fine, because you weigh it up that way ( I haven't, but it happens). That's what I mean by 'holier than thou'. As I said, the most common retort is 'this is different' - well, says who ? It ISNT that these matters may (or may not) be worthy enough, but that they are no more or less relevant now than they were 2 days, 2 weeks, 2 years, 20 years, 100 years, ago. There are no more questions now than then, and no more answers. You (apologies if this is an error on my part, but you will get the point) haven't previously asked yourself all those questions have you ? Well, most haven't, because they go to football to watch football and talk about football. Not to place it in the wider context of world affairs or labour relations. When Villa played Santos in the Seventies we hired a generator so the game could go ahead. I don't remember anybody saying we were betraying the principles of the miners strike ......we play International football against teams whose governments have committed atrocities. Some may well argue ours has. Does it stop us ? Does it mean we suffocate ourselves in debate about ethics, or do we watch the game and hope we win ? When you watch a Hollywood blockbuster do you question where all that money goes, do you question the drugs ? When you buy anything from any multinational do you have these debates ? No. Why ? Because if you are buying a coffee you just want to enjoy the coffee. If you are buying a Chinese toy you just want your kids to enjoy it. If we tapped up a player that 10 other Clubs wanted and we got him, would you be fuming at our lack of ethics ? Would you prefer someone else to tap the player up ? I just want to enjoy watching Villa, and enjoying talking about the football. And I want us to win. And, within reason (there is that grey area again, it is just a matter of degree), I'm not fussed how.

Popular Post Mark Albrighton Posted June 14, 2016 VT Supporter Popular Post Share Posted June 14, 2016 Welcome Dr Tony. I like the way you've acted during the takeover process with a steady assurance and decorum when there was much scaremongering from certain areas. Please be a good owner of Aston Villa. Please.
