That school of thought didn't even hold up at the time, really. I don't think you need the benefit of hindsight of decades of international trade experience to foresee that a deal to trade with your neighbours is likely to yield more value than one with countries several time zones away

Well we were also told a bunch of guff about how it wouldn’t affect existing trade with the EU.

Like a game show, we were told the prizes we’d won so far were safe (frictionless trade, no taxes and duties). Voting leave we’d be able to shoot for the star prize - lucrative trade deals with the US, India, Taiwan etc. Worst case, as you were.

A critical incident has been declared at Dover as coach passengers face delays of several hours at the start of the Easter getaway due to bad weather and long processing times in France.

P&O Ferries and DFDS Seaways also reported delays to their ferries crossing the English Channel.

Strong winds are adding to the problem, ferry operator DFDS Seaways said.

But the Port said "processing for freight and tourist traffic in cars is normal for peak periods".

However, freight traffic is being queued on the edge of the town, the Port authorities said.

It also added that the Port, ferry operators and other partners "are working hard to resolve the current issue".

If only this was predictable.

It doesn’t standup to any kind of sensible scrutiny either does it?

We want to have passports checked and stamped individually… but also believe there will be no delays for UK citizens travelling into and out of the EU.

Hilarious. The Tory infighting has started with one unnamed Tory blaming Sunak as he's been chancellor or Prime Minister for 3 years and failed to seize any of the advantages of leaving the European Union.

Hahahahaha.

They STILL believe there are advantages despite Multiple Tory regimes failing to find any and including their lengthy stint with the sun shining out of his arse Uber Brexiteer who parachuted himself in to save the deal Bozza in charge.

Honest to god 25 years from now there will still be some insane Tory banging on about the failure to realise the huge upside of Brexit.  They're mad.

Q. What are we going to do?

A. We’ll realise the benefits of being out of the EU.

Q. Such as?

Yeah, I'd love a proper informed journalist to properly quiz one of those nutjobs when they start going on about realising the benefits.

It's not just the nutjobs in the Tory party though. It's the labour party position too. Starmer set out his 5 point plan and it is goes on and on about the missed opportunities of Brexit. No rejoining the EU, or even the single market, no freedom of movement.

Look upon our politicians and despair.

"we'll import everything from somewhere else and get our labour from even further east..."

None of those things are in his gift to offer even if he becomes Prime Minister.

"We'll enter a new discussion with the EFTA Council and European Commission to negotiate the potential terms of our participation in the EEA" isn't the massive vote winner that people seem to think it is.

It would obviously be nice if we could just click our fingers and make all the horrid Brexit stuff go away, but "just rejoin the Single Market" is just the UK talking to itself about what it wants, in the same way as the Tories were from 2016 - 19.

Absolutely agree with that but the problem is, that it's a discussion we need to have with ourselves and that discussion needs to be started by political leaders and the current opposition whose membership is broadly on one side of the discussion isn't having that conversation.

Leaders need to lead, currently Starmer is at best hiding on the issue and at worst going along with the Tory narrative. I even understand why, it clearly worked in the local elections for Brexity Areas but those more middle class / remainy areas are completely turned off by Labour.

And all that is fine if that is what Labour want to do to get into power but on the other hand, its almost a zero sum gain recovering Red Wall seats and not attracting remain types. It's a stagnant position that won't move Labour much further forward than where they are. I'm sure he's done his maths but personally speaking, it's a huge turn off for me. I've seen a good number of comments from people that broadly agree with my sentiments of PR / Rejoiny type thoughts that really aren't going to vote Labour because of those personal red lines

I reckon whoever gets in will spend the first 4 years forging closer ties to Europe, see how that goes and if they win a second term and feel rejoining would be the better option then run a second referendum so the will of the people can have it's way.
