I'm an Aston Villa fan. Not a top-flight-only-we-might-win-it-every-70-years-fan. I think this talk of the club dying is ridiculous. It didn't happen to Leeds, it won't happen to us.

What on earth is the connection between the first two sentences and the third sentence ? I hope I'm not stood next to anyone on Saturday who says that.

As for the 4th sentence...oh, yeah, you are right, of course.  It didn't happen to Leeds, they aren't dead.  Flourishing in fact.  Their fans are also quite happy to accept that the Revie years was a one -off.  To be serious, surely it depends on what you mean by dying.  Each time I go to the Villa it feels more and more like it is, for all practical purposes, dead.

Now, all sorts of nice things might happen, that's one of the great things about football. But all sorts of really unexpected nasty things can happen to.  Which trajectory do you think we are on ?

Massively off-topic, I know, and I expect I am about 100 years behind the times, but I've just stumbled across the @BoringMIlner Twitter feed which made me smile for the first time today.

It may be #DeadlineDay, but I won't be going anywhere. There's no way I can put my cat through the upheaval of moving house again.

Completely the wrong place to put them, obviously, but here are a few other football related Twitter accounts that get a chuckle:

What? Odd post.

I mean that I'll support this club till the day I die, no matter what division they're in. I don't care if they win things, as much as I enjoy it as the next man.

Happy to say that to your face, oddly enough! L3, row VV, seat 56!

We can blame Lerner for a lot, we can blame the board for a lot, but we cannot blame them for not spending money (except for maybe this window).

I blame Lerner for not spending money. Not spending enough, not regularly enough, not in the right way, not at the right time, .  I'll stick with blaming him for those things.

And I blame him for not giving a damn that I  blame him

Chelsea have announced Remy is available for loan!

Why are we not on the phone?!?

He doesn't want to come here, also he will not keep us up either so it would be a waste of time and money

Fair enough. I didn't say I had an issue with what those 1st two sentences meant.  It was their juxtaposition with the next bit.  But if I've misunderstood, all well and good.  It did look there like you were making a connection between the fact that you were not a fair weather fan and the prophets of doom saying the Club were dying.  You know, as the statements followed each other it was as if those who feared the worst may be, shall we say, a little more fair weather.  That's why I wouldn't have been chuffed to hear it said. But if that's not what you meant, fair enough.

Anyway I'm in the upper.

Ok, but rather than just ask you implied a physical threat. Not cool dude.

You're in the upper, so you must know the one that goes "we'll keep the lions/Holte flag flying high"? I prefer the Holte version myself, for what is worth!

It was as close to a rallying call as I can be bothered to muster right now. I do understand your confusion though yes.

Aston Villa's rejection XI: The team of Remi Garde targets the club failed to land - and why

Right-back - Mathieu Debuchy

Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger, has admitted that Debuchy will probably leave on Deadline Day, but we are not expecting Villa to be his destination with Remi Garde choosing to focus on bringing in a striker.

Debuchy would have added vital experience to Villa’s cause having played Champions League football throughout his career, as well as featuring 27 times for France. He was this evening believed to be close to finalising a loan move to Bordeaux in his native land.

Centre-back - Lamine Sane

The Senegalese defender was set to move to Villa Park earlier in the window, with Garde keen to capture the Bordeaux defender in a loan swoop. But that failed to materialise with the 28-year-old deciding to stay put.

He would have represented a good piece of business for Villa, but central defence is an area where they have a number of players capable of filling the void should they get the occasional injury.

Centre-back - Lamine Kone

Another target from France, well known to the manager, who slipped through the net. Garde and his network of scouts had watched him in action for Lorient, only for the Ivory Coast defender to opt for Sunderland, another of Villa's relegation rivals.

Kone, who can play in central defence and at full-back, is believed to have moved for a fee in the region of £5 million.

Left-back - Ashley Cole

Following the injury to Jordan Amavi in November, the club were linked with a host of left-backs that could come in to replace the France under-21 international. The one that stood out was former England defender, Ashley Cole and Garde admitted his interest in him.

However, the ex-Chelsea man has decided to end his career with LA Galaxy in the MLS.

A move to Villa was feasible with Cole’s demands said to be realistic, but the player decided that he would rather link up with former England captain Steven Gerrard in California.

Right-midfield - Wahbi Khazri

The Tunisian international has long been touted for a move to the Premier League, with the Villans among a few clubs interested. But the Bordeaux flyer opted to join relegation rivals Sunderland instead.

Due to Villa’s perilous position, it is no great surprise that the midfielder chose the Black Cats. Yet another kick in the teeth for a clearly disgruntled Garde.

Central-midfield - Gokhan Inler

Remi Garde admitted that Inler was among the players he was considering in more optimistic times earlier this month. It won't be happening. At the time of writing a loan move to Bundesliga club Hamburg seemed the most likely transfer for the Swiss midfielder who has struggled to get a regular look-in at unlikely title chasers Leicester.

Central-midfield - Jeremy Toulalan

The 32-year-old French international would have occupied the defensive midfield position at Villa, a position that they have struggled to fill following Carlos Sanchez’ injury - and even before it, to a certain extent.

The Monaco captain appeared to want a stint in England before retirement, but that a move to Villa fell by the wayside, mainly because the claret and blues were not willing to commit themselves to a hefty financial outlay for a player of his age.

Left-midfield - Steven Naismith

The Scotland forward had impressed in the Premier League with Everton, which made people wonder why the Merseyside club were prepared to let him leave.

He would have been a good signing for Villa but Norwich won the race for the former Rangers man’s signature after a lengthy pursuit dating back to last summer.

He started to justify a £8.5 million that proved beyond Villa with an impressive Canaries debut in the goal-laden defeat to Liverpool.

Striker - Loic Remy

The Chelsea forward has been linked with a switch to almost every Premier League club during the window, but with the clock ticking down, his most likely destination appears to be surprise leaders Leicester City.

Villa wanted to take the France striker on loan, but have now conceded that a deal is almost impossible with several other clubs in the running. He could have potentially scored the goals to give Villa a fighting chance of survival.

Striker - Seydou Doumbia

Undoubtedly Villa’s biggest blow of the transfer window came this morning when Roma striker Seydou Doumbia decided to join Newcastle rather than Villa.

Garde had met with the striker to try and convince him to move to the second city, but the striker wasn’t in favour of the idea.

Like Remy, Doumbia could have been vital during the end of season run-in, but he will probably play his part in relegating the claret and blues from afar now.
