Council boss asks police to clear rough sleepers before Windsor royal wedding

A council leader has been branded "abhorrent" after calling on police to clear rough sleepers from Windsor before the royal wedding.

Conservative councillor Simon Dudley said beggars could present the town in a "sadly unfavourable light" when Prince Harry marries American actress Meghan Markle in May.

He tweeted that some rough sleepers had made a "commercial life choice praying on residents and tourists".

In a letter to police he complained about "aggressive begging and intimidation" and "bags and detritus" on the streets.

His comments were criticised by a local homeless charity manager, who described them as "sickening".

Murphy James, of Windsor Homeless Project, said: "It's absolutely abhorrent that anybody has got these views in this day and age, especially a lead councillor of the borough.

"If somebody is sleeping out on the street they are not there by choice, they are there because something has gone wrong."

He added: "I went out on Christmas Day and there were 12 people laid out on Windsor High Street, they were not there by choice."

Mr James described it as "sickening" that Mr Dudley cited the royal wedding as a reason for his comments.

Mr Dudley, leader of Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, tweeted that there is "an epidemic of rough sleeping and vagrancy" in the town and demanded police "focus on dealing with this before the #RoyalWedding".

Windsor Police tweeted in reply: "We need to protect the most vulnerable in society by working together but each agency must understand its own unique responsibilities.

"Housing is the responsibility of the council but it is better that agencies work together so people don't become homeless.

"We deal with reports of begging proportionately but we have not had reports of anyone being marched to cashpoints to take out money."

Mr Dudley wrote a letter to police and crime commissioner for Thames Valley Police Anthony Stansfeld dated January 2, calling on officers to take action.

He said police should use their powers under the 1824 Vagrancy Act and the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 to "protect residents and tourists".

He said that "bags and detritus" are a "significant security concern, especially given the national importance of Windsor".

"Obviously, the level of tourist interest is set to multiply with the Royal Wedding in May 2018, and there are increased concerns from our residents about their safety," he wrote.

"The whole situation also presents a beautiful town in a sadly unfavourable light."

Mr Stansfeld said he was "somewhat surprised" that the letter was released publicly before being "sent directly to me".

"I myself attended a Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead Council in October and these issues were not raised," he added.

"I will of course provide Cllr Dudley with a full response addressing his concerns once I have received the letter and investigated further the issues he has raised."

He added: "Protecting the public is of the utmost importance to both myself and Thames Valley Police and the force work day in and day out to keep people safe from harm and make the Thames Valley a safe place to live, work and visit."

I really don't know how Jeremy Hunt is getting away with what he is doing to the NHS. I know it has been his sole aim for the last 5 years, in fact the Tories aim since 2010, to do everything it can to set the NHS up to fail, but surely enough is enough. The NHS is now pretty much missing every target and the pressure has again resulted in a crisis in A and E and waiting times through the roof with patients on trolleys in corridors the norm. One in 10 hospital trusts declared a major incident in the last 24 hours.

At a time when there are tens of thousands of nursing vacancies the governments answer was to firstly scrap bursaries and from September 2017 you have had to pay 9k a year to take a 3 year nursing degree, which involves months on placements basically doing 37 hours a week for nothing working as a nursing assistant,  to three years later get a job that will initially pay just over 20k a year. Really appealing. To top it off we now have health service workers from Europe deciding to go back home as they no longer feel secure here.

I really feel we are going to lose our NHS as we know it and it won't resemble in anyway what the Tories inherited in 2010 by the time they have finished with it. This countries finest achievement has always gone against Tory ideology and they have some how been given the time to give it their best shot at destroying it. I get the feeling some people won't know what they have lost until it is gone or until they are unfortunate enough to fall ill.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt sorry as A&Es struggle to cope

By Alex Therrien and Nick TriggleBBC News

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt has apologised to patients in England who have had their operations postponed.

Non-urgent treatments had already been cancelled until mid-January, but NHS England said on Tuesday that would now be extended to the end of the month.

It came after hospitals reported they were struggling to cope with the surge in patients being seen since Christmas.

At least 17 hospital trusts - one in 10 - have declared a major incident in the last 24 hours, the BBC understands...........

Says it all. Acknowledges an "epidemic of homeless people", and his only priority is making sure people don't have to see them on Harry's big day. Scum.

Just listening to BBC News on the radio and they interviewed some local Windsor residents and one snooty cow commented that these people need to be moved on as they are a real blight on Windsor. I wonder how and where she thinks they should be moved on to. Maybe catch them in a net, blind fold them, throw them in the boot of a car and dump them somewhere up north.

I can't stand compassion less people like her but it feels like there has been an increase in people lacking compassion in recent years.

Tory PARTY MEMBERS  apparently completely isolated in their regressive views

fixed that for you

should also be noted that  44 per cent of Tory(party)  members are aged 65 or over, so some of the views as lefties like to repeatedly point out , will die out soon anyway :)

Do you think Tory voters will be much different in their views to the members?

I wouldn't make that claim, I'd be told me and my politics are shit.

Almost certainly Tory voters will be closer to the middle of the electorate than members. Members are pretty much always 'true believers', especially in the Tory party.
