It's quite hard to understate just how bad a place we were in when we finally sacked Lambert - mentally the team were absolutely shot. you are right we have done well and we were in dire straits....Tim has kept us up. but if we are going to improve, you can't say regardless of this game or that game....we went in to games in '81 to win every one and with a 110% workrate ethic. Stoke didn't have to score 6 goals today Mourinho is now talking about improving on this season , next season.....That has to be the Mantra.....all relative of course. What I am saying is I don't want the team to slip back in to easy street with a bunch of get out of jail cards...... we need a tougher edge to us. Saying "regardless of the last two games" isn't giving the team "get out of jail cards" it's just offering an assessment of Sherwood's entire time with us so far rather than being influenced disproportionately by the last two games (which some seem to be doing). dn1982 Posted May 25, 2015 Share Posted May 25, 2015 Sherwood got us winning 50% of our games. We went from not creating a chance to looking dangerous against every team. People say he's just a motivator or that he doesn't know tactics yet results and performances show that to be a load of crap. He's still new to this and inevitably will make mistakes but if we win half the games next year we will be loving him. We seem to have a system in place for transfers now so I'm looking forward to what he can do next season. Difference is Grant Holt hadn't just been given his second period of time off due to personal problems. Which includes his brother holding a knife to his throat. Honestly, with all the stuff going on with Adebayor, I'd be surprised if he plays football again for a long time, if ever again.Yet alone us signing him. Someone saying they aren't allowed to criticise Sherwood !....I struggle to think of any other Manager we have had who has had so much doubt and criticism in such a short time based on so few games, so it really comes over as odd when people start off apologising in that way. Just make your points and have them debated would be better wouldn't it ? Then the actual concerns.... One player, Gil, has aroused all sorts, from curiosity as to why he hasn't played - which I share - to it being a sign the Manager is clueless or instantly had a vendetta against the guy !!! Which is beyond belief. " How can you trust a manager who plays Zog at left back ".....does anyone seriously not see the reasoning behind that, given we almost have no defenders left... Worried about how he will be in the transfer market ? Hope he doesn't just buy Spurs/ English p!Ayers ?,......Based on what !!!! By that logic we should only have managers who have a proven record in the transfer market !!!! And who are they ? Talk about negatives for negatives sake. Tactics Tim ?.......I have never heard so much talknof tactics, anyone would think people had heard the comments of a few Spurs fans and repeated it like gossip. There isn't a manager alive who gets tactics right all the time. Most recent example Brendan Rodgers, the darling of the media until recently, totally out thought by Sherwood, totally destroyed by Stoke yesterday. Hell get some right and some wrong, but after less than half a season it is surely crazy to be so apocalyptic about his knowledge. And why the sudden huge importance of tactics ? All the best Managers assemble good squads of the right players for their chosen style, drill them in it, and put the responsibility on the players to perform. Good sides are those where character, skill, and belief are blended with all knowing their roles. Only in isolated cases will tactics be a deciding factor. Now Sherwood may or may not achieve that, but from his comments and decisions so far ( some which I'd agree with and some I wouldn't) he seems like he could be that type of Manager. Why not wait and see, since if he is, wed have a good thing. His style will win us some but how far forward can he take us ? How far are people expecting ? From the results so far it is as reasonable to think he can get us top ten as it is to think he can match Lambert's two years and Mcleishes one. Surely from where we are that's good for the next year or two ? My personal opinion of Sherwood is that there has been too little time for me to form a view as to how good, or bad, he could end up, but the overly pessimistic nature of a lot of these posts seems to me to be desperately out of kilter at the present time for a guy who - however he did it, and whatever didn't work - kept us up, produced some good football, re- energised, to some extent, the corpse the club had become, and got us to Wembley. Tell you what, there would be a lot of worried people if he walked away. Allerdyce anyone ? The guy who bought Carroll ? And so on. He should be at the top of his game in the Cup final and will be under the spot light, im sure we will have a true indicator weather he has the minerals for the premiership and AVFC. We've dominated good teams because of good tactics and we've won games with excellent play, not because we ran around a lot. We win more, we score more, we play better most of the time, we survived, we're in a cup final. So far excellent job. Now time to build his own squad and continue. Lets see what he can do. Although if new owners came in who Klopp I wouldn't say no. As that will never happen.. lets just wait and see.
