We should just let VillaCas answer that one EA. I'm sure there will be another obscure or inaccurate graph on the way, that is if he now reappears?

To be fair, his graph (assuming it's the average points one) wasn't obscure or inaccurate. It made a very valid point and to simply dismiss it is being far more blinkered than he was.

Ha, ha. 'Far more blinkered than he was?'

The last graph he produced he admited himself that it wasn't accurate. Generally his graphs have been produced on the basis of present improvement using points and position.

His debate on points has now been proven by another poster to be wrong.

I specified it being the one I was thinking of, which was average points.

The difference is his was based on Lambert's tenure, not just the first half of this season.

And if he's admitted when he posted it that it wasn't accurate then what's the problem? He's admitted he's wrong, so are you just point scoring?

Based on Lambert's tenure eh? I have asked him on five occasions to produce a stat showing exactly that and he has refuse to do it.

Secondly you stated 'to simply dismiss it is being far more blinkered than he was' without actually knowing what i was referring to so who is trying to point score here?

No. I said IF it was the graph I was thinking of then to simply dismiss it would be blinkered.

It wasn't, so that doesn't apply. So there's no issue.

^^^ I think the frustration from some people comes because last year Lambert was getting criticised (not by you) for good performances but not picking up any points. At that time it seemed to be only points and league position that mattered.

This season people are criticising him for the opposite (which, fwiw, I believe has happened as a direct result of last season). Now it seems to be "it's all very well getting points, but it's performances that really matter"

The " holy grail" is both.....you need both Results and performances.

They indicate slightly different things.

you can win and be very lucky....which can indicate that you might not have the same luck in the next game, suggesting a fans tentative  approach going in to the game.

you can have a really good performance and lose....which can indicate better luck next time with a prevailing wind a win next time is on the cards, suggesting a fans upbeat approach to win next time and that can't wait to get down to the ground approach.

They are both important bits of criteria, but sometimes get used in the wrong context.

PS  I have never been a results and nothing else matters man....I look for a bit more/deeper.

Of course, and I don't disagree whatsoever.

But it's my belief (and I don't know it, I can only guess) that, like us, Lambert acknowledged that last season we were a decent team going forward (at times) which led to some good performances, but our appalling defence meant that we didn't pick up the points needed to guarantee our safety.

I think (think!) he's addressed that this season, tightened up the defence, but at the cost of playing some turgid football a lot of the time.

BUT, it's gotten us more points, we've conceded way less goals and generally look to be in a better position to stay in the league this season.

I completely agree that the next step is to combine the two things. From this base of ok results, add some more free flowing football, better performances and it'll get us more points again. Gradual improvement.

Maybe it's me just being hopeful, or wishful thinking. But that's how I see it.

If things don't improve in the future then questions will have to be asked. But I've seen enough to suggest that our upward trend (it's not a huge trend but it's improvement) can continue, especially as we've more or less got to the stage where we don't have to keep shredding the wage bill and can hopefully concentrate on adding to it sensibly.

If that doesn't happen and results/performances don't continue to improve then Lambert's job will have to be considered. And I'd be lying if I said my faith in Lambert had remained 100% over the past few months.

But like I said, I think (hope) we'll continue to progress.

Never been a great fan of stats in the sense that they provide an indication but not much more, I prefer watching the game and going with my gut.

It is also very misleading to judge the points tally at any time on a calendarisation basis due to the scheduling of different teams during the season v previous season. It just don't work out due to too many variables.

I just wish we'd continued our good play and points collection from the end of last season. I was really optimistic at the start of the season but the style and tactics, Liverpool aside, has been poor, negative and uninspiring and if it continues we will only finish on roughly the same amount of points as last year and that isn't good. I didn't think 50 points was overly ambitious to achieve and yet I cant see that happening.

No one gives a shit about cup games

Given that we have floated in and around mid-table obscurity to relegation fodder over the past don't know how many years and given we are highly unlikely to qualify for Europe I actually give a shit about cup games. Its the one and only slim chance we have of winning something. But hey at least we get to to go the big grounds every year instead.

Also the opinion of James Nursey is not something that should be overly respected.

What a daft comment, winning is basically everything in football now

Why's it daft? We agree. Winning is everything. Out of our 22 league games we've won 6 of them. I get enjoyment from results and performances not from knowing 10 teams have currently less points.
You measure success against expectations, I don't feel a failure this year for not being managing director of the company I work for, I'm happy with my little promotion.

Much as I'm content with seeing villa in 10th currently as opposed to the 16th we finished in last season.

But like I said if your joy comes from our position in the league why bother going to games or watching us on TV? The enjoyment comes from results and performances. Usually they go hand in hand with a decent league position but this year everyone from 9th down have been poor.

Look at houlliers season, we finished 9th but as a season it was awful to watch for large parts and not one I can say I actually enjoyed much of.

Fundamentally we're not disagreeing but I just think it's a bit daft to sledge people who place emphasis on league position over performance.

At the end of the season the first priority is do not get relegated, I'd love to see great football, we all would but my concern is being in the premier league, all other concerns are secondary
