Aston Villa to appoint Roy Keane as Paul Lambert’s assistant by early July

Aston Villa expect confirm deal with former Manchester United captain before the players return for pre-season training on July 7

Aston Villa are set to complete the appointment of Roy Keane as Paul Lambert’s assistant next week.

Villa expect to tie up the formalities of the deal before Lambert’s squad return for pre-season training on July 7.

Keane is prepared to join Villa’s coaching staff despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of the club, with chairman Randy Lerner desperate to secure a quick sale.

Lambert’s former assistants Ian Culverhouse and Gary Karsa were both dismissed at the end of last season after disciplinary issues and Keane’s appointment will come as a boost to the Scot.

Keane will combine his role as Lambert’s No. 2 with his position working alongside Martin O’Neill for the Republic of Ireland.

The former Manchester United midfielder pulled out of ITV’s World Cup coverage earlier this month and is determined to make his return to the Premier League.

Shay Given’s own future remains uncertain, with the former Ireland goalkeeper looking for a move away from Villa Park.

Given was promoted to Lambert’s coaching staff following the initial suspensions of Culverhouse and Karsa but wants to pursue his bid for first-team football.

A slightly odd aspect of this is that Keane reportedly pulled out of his commentating role at the World Cup so he could join Villa - but hasn't yet.

Meanwhile his boss MON has popped upat the World cup doing some commentating.

Wh'appen?

Probably taking a break from everything football to get prepared for full time work again. Pulling out of the world cup was probably the confirmation that he's coming. If he'd gone to Brazil for the full duration he'd pretty much be flying home and starting work the next morning. His house in Ipswich is for sale so he's probably moving his family closer to Birmingham at moment and all that sort of thing.

All I know is that at some point Roy Keane will probably be our manager and that makes me sad inside.

It's kind of inevitable, at some point the pressure will mount on Lambert, and the team will be performing poorly. Lambert will be relieved of his duties as he'll have around 6 months left on his contract. Then Keane will step up.

I hope this doesn't become the case.

I feel this is really bad news for our club, an appointment with a lot of risk attached to it - and a potential upside that does not compute with said risk.

The man has failed most places he has been - and he has left many of his clubs on a bad note.

He falls out with people, he looks down at others, he only accepts his own opinion - this is not what I look for in a leader and a coach.

He was great at winning with United and his job was to tackle and break up play, but he does not strike we as a clever or analytical football-person.

Could at best turn out to be a decent assistant manager, but most likely he will create a bad atmosphere and leave before this season or next is over.

I'm still hoping its in some way linked to the takeover and that's the reason for the delay.

Unfortunately it's more likely an example of more penny pinching by Lerner :-/

I'd have thought Keane's not the kind of person to tolerate that. I'm probably just clutching at any tiny straw I can that maybe we will be taken over this summer.

It's a good route back into the premier league though for him despite the state of the club. Realistically no one's going to offer him a managerial job in the prem so this is the next best route.

I too think he'll be our manager at some point this season, no way Lambert is surviving 38 games this time.

For me this, if true would indicate a takeover is imminent.

I really don't understand how it will work. Keane is the sort of character who will come out and speak his mind underperforming players, team not performing etc. We all know what he is like. Lambert is the polar opposite. I can see this ending.in nothing but tears

This. Lambert will be praising the players after a typical shit performance whereas Keane will slate them after a miraculous good performance. Not a great combination.

I've red the majority of the comments regarding the future appointment of Roy Keane. I like Lambert, or liked, but the way he handles team talks and tactics during matches hasen't always paid of. Seems to be a bit to nice and positive even when the team is having a s**** match. You need someone who manages to motivate the players and shout and show a bit of aggression, some passion which in result would affect the players and motivate as well!

Now I'm not saying that Roy Keane is that guy but neither is Lambert. You want someone who can be aggressive but still in a good way.

Long story short, Lambert to nice and Keane to aggressiv. I bet their baby would be that guy...
