What job will you be leaving, if you don't mind my asking? Any idea on what you do next?

I went on a couple of long periods over the last two years without working and it's tough out there. It really makes you appreciate having a job, though I think I am lucky that I'm not working for a really good company who treat their people right, are on the rise and I'm pretty good at what I do by all accounts. I've never been in a job like that before.

Im currently working for a large purple hotel chain, its a fantastic company to work for in terms of progression and opportunity but Ive just had enough, cant really explain it. Its not just a month or two lull which people have. Ive been telling friends and family I want to leave for over a year, ive just plucked up the courage to do it and break away.

Originally I though it was the industry that I wanted to get away from but I love it, I just need a new project/brand/environment and Im hope full about getting a job as part of a new development in Birmingham.

I work in a specialised part of the insurance industry, and am also at the point where I either need to be paid considerably more or need to get out before I lose my mind. I'm getting to the point where I'm struggling to care, which is something I've never even had come into my mind before now. Coasting through a day waiting for 5.

The missus has been totally f'd over by her current employer - she's had an offer from a 'Big 4' firm, which is exceptionally good given where she started from. The current employer is trying to go back nearly 4 years claiming various training expenses (bearing in mind she's also been through 2 acquisitions so those expenses weren't incurred by the current employer). Considering some form of legal advice, but it will most likely just end up too expensive and stressful given we're saving for a house. Feel so sorry for her, elated earlier on this week to feeling totally deflated by Wednesday.

If it's a big four position then I'm assuming the training is ACA or another accounting qualification? If so, with these taking 3 years and your partner leaving after 4 years, how long do they wish her to stay on before she is contractually allowed to leave freely?

You usually have to sign a form for training and exams and on that form you will have details of when they can claw back and when they can't. It's usually 2 years after an exam or training was taken. She should also ask her prospective employer if they would pay for the costs. Many companies do if they want to really hire the person.

She isn't doing the ACA - having done it myself I wouldn't wish it on anyone!

She's doing a tax qualification (ATT) of which she's completed all but one e-assessment to finish it - my issue was the fact her original training contract was signed before 2 subsequent acquisitions and she signed a revised one with the current company only covering the remaining e-assessments - they tried to clawback 7k in the end which covered the written papers under the original contract.

So she's staying for now but they can't claim back a thing once she's completed the qualification - so we shall see where we are at then.

Not a great situation to be in, especially as we spend so many hours of our weeks in work, it is important to care, and if possible, be happy with what it is that you do.

Why do you think you have got to this stage? Do you have a degree etc that you might want to explore further or do something different with?

I hit that wall recently working for a large global recruitment company. I found myself doing the same things over and over and working towards the same targets every month. Stress stress stress... Last week I joined a company just down the road from my house, has about 80 people working for it, no personal targets etc. the role itself is also slightly different. Whilst it is recruitment I will also be taking on some account management and incorporating lean thinking/six sigma into the role. It was a tough decision to take on this new role and getting out of my comfort zone - but you need to take care of yourself!!

Funnily enough quite literally as I posted that one of my colleagues resigned.

It's a long story but basically a combination of things, right now we're on a very quiet period doing files and tidying up after a busy period. It's tedious, barely occupies the mind. In a busy period we're working all hours of the day (8 to 8 not uncommon, day on day) in a very stressful situation. I'm not very well paid (a colleague was shocked when I intimated aroundabout where my salary lay). I'm tired of it. I like the people but the job is shit and the money makes it difficult to put up with.

I have a degree but it's not vocational, I picked it as it opened doors to many fields but in reality it's just a degree.

I have a day off today and have my boss texting me about where we are with some renewals and if I have them all invited. I've explained before I can't invite them as the insurer has requested numerous extra details before putting forward any terms. His text is going on about how crucial it is we get these all renewed to our final numbers - I already know this, but what am I going to do about it? I've requested the details from all the clients, explained the policy ends soon and we need thme to get back to us, get a price and renew, and it's my day off.

Increasingly I'm feeling like I don't want to do this shit anymore. It's incredibly stressful for a long part of the year and I'm laughably underpaid, have been given very little instruction as I've been required to pick it up as I go along and spend most of the day treading on eggshells as you worry about anything going wrong. And weird stuff is happening in the wider business.

Oh and my colleague who resigned? Her job had to be posted on the company intranet for internal vacancies. I saw the predicted salary and it made me sick. Quite literally more than double my salary. No wonder she was shocked when I suggested where mine was.

What have you done about it?

Career as a fluffer has hit a crossroads due to new the pornography restrictions. Businesses are buggering off to sexually deviant parts of Europe, leaving us hard working folk out of the job.

Well, it's about time you realized that porn was not a career that just doles out cash: it's no ATM.

Why do you take any notice of the texts? It's your day off: ignore them.
Good point. I guess I don't want to let anyone down. I try to do my best for everyone, clients and colleagues, and try to help as much as I can, so I feel like I should respond. Saying that, it is getting harder to care.

It's my personal phone as well, which should annoy me as well. If they need me to be contactable away from the office they should be giving me a phone.

I understand about not wanting to let people down and trying your best; I'm also not suggesting being obstinately bolshie. But unless you've already said it's okay for you to be contacted or the office is burning down (metaphorically is enough) then I wouldn't answer then. As soon as you start doing so (and unless you stop or say something about it), the attitude taken will be 'Dean doesn't mind' and then you'll get called just as if you were in your own office at work.
