Worst ever Villa game

One I've not seen yet.

29th December 2009

Aston Villa 0-1 Liverpool

Scorer: Torres 90+3'

Absolutely battered them, they didn't have a kick. One challenge from Sidwell deflected through past Dunne, all Torres needed in those days was a hint of a sniff. Goal.

A win would have put us level third above City and Spurs, as it was, we stayed sixth and Liverpool moved to within two points of us.

Feel sick thinking about it.

There are a few different ways I could think of games being the worst, and the ones that actually came to mind when reading this weren't necessarily the worst in terms of performance alone, but were the most deflating in therms of their effect on me. And all ones I've not seen mentioned yet.

First up was Villa 0 - 1 Oldham in the 1992-3 season, which officially ended our title chase. After such a brilliant campaign to surrender at home to Oldham (who complete the double over us with that win, I believe) was a huge shock and a real emotional blow to me.

(Actually, notice on preview this was mentioned a couple of pages back...)

Then there was Villa 0 -2 Newscastle the following season. Not one of our worst performances, but the first game that brought home that that season was not going to live up to the previous one, and that we were a team on a downward slump.

Then Villa 0 - 4 Blackburn in August 1997. First home game of the season. I had a season ticket in those pre-marriage and kids days, and was really full of enthusiasm for the coming season after 4th and 5th placed finished under Little previously. I thought Blackburn were a team past their best and anticipated a nice opening win. I vividly remember the utter disbelief and sense of unreality I felt seeing the ball ripple our net over and over again. The season that spelled the end for Little as manager, too, which I was pretty gutted about.

was also an unfortunate slip from Warnock in that game think it was just before the ball fell to Torres

In terms of entertainment value (or lack of it), I'd say the 0-0 v Everton in the 1977 League Cup final. Ninety minutes of play in which nothing happened at all.

And yet, just to show how odd football is, that is one of my favourites !!

Coz my Dad took me, chancing it without a ticket, and I will never forget the atmosphere outside, then getting in with half hour to play  - coz people were leaving as it was so dull !! Never forget going in and looking up and up and up - so it seemed - at this stadium rising into the sky, and a million Villa flags fluttering .......also, what a great game it ultimately led to.

Worst....FA Cup semi Final v Liverpool at Old Trafford - really thought we were going to win the Cup...........the Carling Final to Man U - as we were robbed.............the 2-2 with Stoke - how different things may have gone ?...........and too many to remember from the eigthies !!

Don't forget Simod Cup home defeat by Bradford . 0-5 it was and Ormo obviously caught GT's eye as we signed him soon after.

Attendance was about 7k too!!

I don't think we ever won a match on premplus, I remember buying a lot of them too, I remember watching 1-1 draw v Bolton, the 4-1 defeat at man city when angel gave us the lead and losing 0-2 at home to man utd on there

Bowing out in 2 legs to Bradford is right up there, but in term of style of play there are quite a few too choose from during the last few seasons.

Probably not the worst one but i didn't much enjoy the 2-0 defeat away to CSKA Moscow

That 3-0 defeat against the Noses at The Porndrome and particularly that Enckelman moment. Although losing 2-6 at 4th bottom Southampton in the last game of our relegation season (66/67) was hard to take and losing at Torquay 1-3 and then Southend 0-1 in our only ever FA Cup Round 1 games in 1971 & 72 were also very sad days for the then record holding FA Cup winners.

I remember a horrid game in the 80's when i went to Nottingham to watch us get royally stuffed by Notts County, I think it was something like 5-2 if memory serves but  may be wrong on that... Horrid horrid day and very embarrassing at the time but we got revenge not long after and won 6-0 at theirs in a cup game with a certain David Geddis scoring about 4 goals i think,, that was a freezing cold snowy night and i had hitch hiked to the game!! Cold was not the word! Slept in a farmers barn on the way home and whilst i looks like fun when you see it on a film in real life it's horrid.. lots of bits of straw sticking in you all night which are really itchy and stink....wouldn't recommend it but it was either that or freeze.
