  1. I know some will vehemently disagree with me, but having watched Newcastle a few times this year I think they are incredibly lucky to be where they are. One stat that to me shows how deceptive league position can be is Dubravka’s saves: 18/19 - 38 games - 95 saves - 2.5/game 19/20 - 25 games - 103 saves - 4.12/game No doubt I’ll now be told it shows “ Saint Rafa” was shit as he couldn’t motivate Dubravka to save as much as Bruce gets him to. Joke before anyone piles in...
  2. Presumably he only supports them as when he’s working on a Saturday he’ll be at the game more often than not anyway so it made sense to put his son through their academy. Also gives him a rare chance as a fan to impact the only league table they sit at the top of.
  3. Not really the right place, but I don’t think there’s one for spinsters... As the perennially sad single I forget about Valentine’s Day every year without fail until I walk into a shop or bar/restaurant and am really confused by it being so busy. This year I had the depressing realisation when I went in to Hotel Chocolat shopping for myself
  4. @TRO you could just click the unfollow button so it doesn’t give you a notification whenever someone posts in here rather than insisting the thread is closed. Edit - just saw you already said you’ll give the thread a miss
  5. Anyone have a login to The Athletic? My free trial ran out a week or so ago and I’m quite interested in this article: Next Big Thing: Neil Cutler, Villa’s vocal presence with a big reputation for changing how goalkeepers train I can’t remember any keeper of ours actually improving before the last couple of years. Now we have Steer and Nyland who both seem to have benefitted massively from working with Cutler so he has to be doing something right.
  6. I do bars as well, just don’t like the music too loud. Never find myself in clubs nowadays. I know it’s a good place to drink when I unthinkingly order something like an Aperol spritz and the landlord/landlady either looks at me blankly or like they want to spit in my face.
  7. I guess I get that. When I drink with my friends we get really pissed then argue about anything and everything so I’m not a big fan of places with loud music. When I’m back home in Somerset I love wondering in to a local and joining some weird locals. Between Nigel who used to show everyone his hernia and one landlady that was so pissed one night she fell in the chest freezer and couldn’t get out there are some pretty good characters.
  8. @lapal_fan what on earth do you mean you “don’t do pubs”?! Are you teetotal? I get it if you are, but I’m baffled if not. For me pubs are the holy grail of drinking.
  9. I don’t think many people genuinely think that though, it’s mostly a nostalgia thing or simply wanting clubs you like in the top flight. As football fans we all have teams, players and managers that we irrationally like/dislike!
  10. It pains me to see Sunderland still bumbling along in mediocrity in league 1.
  11. There are more problems to it than this, but we simply aren’t going to be hiring a manager on £200k+ a week* (which he is currently on) as well as buying him out of that £30m contract. Frankly, with the players we need to sign and financial restrictions, it would be completely negligent unless it was a Pep/Klopp tier manager. *about 50% of our wage bill if articles are to be believed
  12. I never found a use for my 150 sweetrolls
  13. You get 35 days holiday in Germany?! Think I might need to visit the Things That Piss You Off But Shouldn’t thread! My dad’s cousin works as some kind of engineer designing car parts and I remember when they moved him from Germany to America his main thing was being able to keep his leave entitlement. Needless to say, with the average American having 10 days a year, his new boss actually laughed at it in their first meeting as he thought it was a joke...
  14. @Laughable Chimp to be fair I imagine it will be almost impossible to account for as there if inflation then there’s the tv deal inflation. Fluctuations of the £ against the euro probably makes a not insignificant difference too but would be a nightmare to unpick. I think you’re on the right track with the wage bill. Although I guess ours may be slightly inflated as most players signed last summer, it still seems like the easiest thing to compare.
  15. It depends. Did you adjust for inflation of transfer fees?
  16. I’m confused. I thought there was a break. Why are only some teams playing this weekend?
  17. Really?! I’d think for a job like that it shows creativity and that the person is a natural entertainer!
  18. Arsenal I think. Not sure he goes unless in an official capacity though.
  19. Obviously some people can’t give much credit but I really don’t think what you’re suggesting is the case generally at all. I think he was OK overall for us, failed towards the end (as he isn’t a squad builder) but did a really good job sorting out attitude when he first came in. I think he’s a knob though and admit I take pleasure from him failing and the shit he comes out with. Add to that I love Newcastle failing. If I write something lighthearted on here enjoying the shite he spouts it will be about 10 minutes before I get accused of giving him no credit at all and being ‘obsessed’.
  20. @Xann I thought that picture was supposed to be one of the Targaryens! Are the Elric books good? I read quite a lot of fantasy stuff but somehow haven’t heard of them.
