Under him we also gave chances to youth players early on. Gabby showed he was good enough while Luke Moore showed he wasn't. Ultimately apart from Cahill and gabby I don't think or youth players were good enough to help us challenge the top four whereas they seem to be a higher standard at Southampton.

That Steven Davis guy that Southampton play in central midfield does seem to be of a higher standard than the type of player that O'Neill had at his disposal.

Southampton have had an insane number of youth players become really good in recent years. They haven't really bought that well, (osvaldo was a bigger cost than all of villas signings put together and can't make the 11) but Lallana, ward prowse, Shaw , clyne, (possibly schneiderlein too?) all came from the youth team and will all make the club huge amounts of money. Not to mention those they've already sold.

It depends on what they do in January. West Brom didn't strengthen and couldn't sustain their momentum with a paper-thin squad. Southampton have a pretty decent squad and with a few fresh faces could comfortably finish top 10.

If it's only about top 10 .. West Brom finished comfortably top 8 .. Although this year I think the whole league is much more tight ..

I agree with you .. But I don't think they're thinking of selling these players tbh .. They have good money .. And they made two of the best signings in Wanyama and Lovren .. Gave them a good balance in the defensive area .. which gave the attackers and Lallana to play for fun ..

and btw Clyne went to them from Palace last year .. but anyway They're the best academy which progress their players .. unlike us we have a good academy but we lack the step up ..

Saints will drop points as they have Chelsea and Man. City coming up shortly but they are a good team people, I really don't see them dropping out of the top 10 this season and will be happy to take up a bet with anyone who thinks otherwise.

IMO they've shown what we need to do next summer (if finances dictate) in rather than signing another 5-6 players to bump up the squad, they just signed 3 top level players to improve their starting 11 and relied on youth prospects/players replaced in the first 11 to make up the bench.

Jury still out on Osvaldo but he has a good pedigree playing for Italy and scoring in Seria A and La Liga. Wanayama and Lovren have improved them significantly, one was playing in the French league, the other for Celtic so proof these players aren't unobtainable.

Southampton: A team who are not willing to sell players, who are looking at how it might be possible to win the league, who are forward thinking.

Villa: A team who will look to sell their best players, who are looking at how to survive.

Why can't people praise other clubs without knocking Villa?

It's not even true anyway - we don't look to sell our best players and midtable is clearly the goal this season.

Not willing to sell players?

We'll come back to that quote at some point and see if Shaw and Lallana are still with them.

They are a flash in the pan, will finish between 8-10th.
