Their squad reminds me of ours when we came down - they need someone to come in and sort out their attitudes (as well as slowly replacing them) before someone like Jones is going to be able to come in and build on it. This is the one thing I think Bruce can take massive credit for with us and the importance of it at the time, newly relegated and 10 games into the new season without a loss can't be understated.
mikeyjavfc Posted October 2, 2019 VT Supporter Share Posted October 2, 2019 Looks like Stoke will be following Sunderland down the leagues. What is strange about Stoke is that they have had the same ownership for years and years and we’re always seen as a well run club in the prem. I wonder what has changed which sparked the string of bad decisions which has sent them down the leagues? If I were them I would be going all out to appoint Chris Hughton on a one year contract with big bonus to stay in championship. Jones has had more than enough time to show some results even if his methods around the club seem sound. The board’s strange insistence on being seen as patient and not reactionary is going to get them relegated.

VillaChris
First three seasons of Mark Hughes had them finishing in top half of premier league. It was just the usual of signing "next level" players which saw them spunk over 50m on Imbula, Berahino and Kevin Wimmer who were all useless and create dressing room divisions. Stoke also never replaced Arnautovic who was a reasonably decent goalscorer for them. In the championship though their squad isn't as bad as what Sunderland went down with imo although of course motivation a big issue.
Demitri_C
Hughes wasn't as bad for stoke as made out. He isn't a great manager but I don't think he would have taken them down tbh. Their biggest mistake was thinking Lambert would do a better job. A absolutely abomination of a appointment and it all went to shit after that. Issue was sacking Hughes and desperately trying get dinosaur MON who turned then down as his fragile ego wouldnt allow them talk to other managers. Then hired Lambert

I definitely wouldn't want any of them in charge of building a squad, but I think they have the abilitity to convince players to "put their boots on" if they have ability and a bad attitude. Unfortunately this tends to run out of steam after a year or so. Bit of a theoretical as the scenario I am saying they would be good at would likely always require squad building. HanoiVillan
There's no point attempting to appoint a manager for 'the long term' in the Championship, where managers have an average shelf-life of barely a year. Clubs need to look at what they need right now, and what Stoke need right now is a manager who will come in, kick the bums out the dressing room, and organise the defence so they're not giving 2-3 daft goals each game. If they don't do that (and real soon), they're going down.

That's so wrong (IMO). And also cause and effect. If a smaller club wants to survive there (say after promotion from League 1) then they're not going to do so through finance, they need long term building. If a mid table club wants to get into the play-offs, then they need to do like, say Preston and build a side over a few seasons. If a relegated club wants to go back up, then if they were a mess (e.g. Villa) then they need a manger who can recover the mess AND be capable of premier league management. The notion of "appoint a promotion specialist like Warnock or Bruce or Pulis to get you straight back up" is gone, now, happily I think.

I think this was the logic with this appointment but it's been a total disaster. They would have been better off going for a manager who has had some success in the championship then gambling on a league one manager. The job was too big for him. Stoke should go for hughton in my opinion or Darren Moore.

sheepyvillian
I think the the owners should applauded motor showing patience. I can't think of another club who would have shown such faith. I hope Jones goes on to prove his doubters wrong.
