ryanvilla_1994
For the first time in about two years we actually looked like a team. I'm sure Lambert has something to do with this and hopefully we can keep it up.
Big_John_10
It's interesting that people are saying that Lambert is like a better version of Martin O'Neill. Better? I'll say so. MON Motivates his starting XI.....................................YES Rotates his squad..............................................NO Can alter formation and tactics to suit the game...NO Knows how to use substitutes.............................NO Knows where to shop overseas...........................NO Can spot a bargain............................................NO Negotiates prices and wages sensibly..................NO Good with the media.........................................YES PL Motivates his starting XI.....................................YES Rotates his squad..............................................YES Can alter formation and tactics to suit the game...YES Knows how to use substitutes..............................YES Knows where to shop overseas............................YES Can spot a bargain.............................................YES Negotiates prices and wages sensibly....................YES Good with the media...........................................NO I know which one I'd rather have! After 1 win is it not a bit premature for this? After 4 premiership games and 50% of them being awful is it not a bit soon to claim these things? I'm a big fan of lambert but this is the kind of thing we'd mocking and laughing at if it appeared on RAWK or any spurs or newcastle site.

Its a bit pointless having this debate, its too soon to judge Lambert and if you look at the work O'Neill did at Wycombe, Leicester, Celtic and Villa then Lammbert does not even compare yet as MON has been successful everywhere he has been. Lets not forget Lambert failed at Livingston, Wycombe and Colchester before he had success at Norwich.

Then it's even more laughable. I seriously doubt many people on here have watched enough Leicester, Celtic and Norwich games involving both managers to form the above opinions. And if it's based on what they've done before villa in management Lambert doesn't come close.

Ok he did a good job but when you take the money he had and the legacy he left into account it doesn't look so good. Lambert has already demonstrated some things that O'Neill never did with us, such as willingness to look abroad and in lower leagues and that he is actually tactically astute. I don't think there's anything wrong with people thinking Lambert is the better manager.
Big_John_10
So in 2 games lambert has proven he is more tactically astute than Mon during his 4 years in charge? Really? Beating swansea at home and drawing with newcastle away has shown more than winning at old trafford or the emirates? Lamberts highest finish in the prem is 12th Mcleish's highest finish in the prem is 9th Now like i said i'm a fan of Lambert but i think its quite ridiculous to claim he is better than MON after 2 good games. Has he got the potential to be better? Yes no doubt about that.

Big_John_10
Correct me if I'm wrong but Lambert spent 3 years at Norwich did he not? And how many 90 minutes games of them did you see? And what did Lambert do at Norwich that was so much better than what MON did at Leicester?

And what did Lambert do at Norwich that was so much better than what MON did at Leicester?A few when they were on TV and when we played them, plus highlights on MOTD obviously. He took them over when they were in League 1 after thrashing them 7-1 with Colchester and led them to back to back promotions before getting them 12th in their first Premier League season (also above a McLeish managed Villa). Big_John_10
Wow looks like you saw lots of them during his 3 years in charge. Which games that you saw showed you his was tactically more astute than MON? Which of those games did you think was more impressive than when we won at old trafford, the emirates or beating chelsea 2-0 at home when mourinho was in charge? And also, like i asked before, what did he do at Norwich that is so much better than what MON did at leicester? Because what you posted doesn't come close. smetrov
Can't back this up with any stats by my gut feeling is:- Martin O Neils best managerial years are behind him Paul Lamberts best managerail years are ahead of him. That said if Lambert gets us 3 top 6 finishes - aand a good cup run I will be more than happy.

In a strange turn of events I agree entirely with you here BJ10. MON was a great manager for us and there were mainly good times with him in charge - the other factors and the events that unfolded after he left don't change what he did on the pitch. Condimentalist
This is a ridiculous conversation. There's absolutely no way that Lambert's record can stand up to O'Neill's. Let's just remind ourselves: Wycombe 2 consecutive promotions and the FA trophy Leicester 4 top ten finishes, 2 League Cups and one League Cup runners up medal. Celtic Three League Titles, 2 Scottish Cups, a League Cup (including the domestic treble in his first season), 7 consecutive victories in Old Firm matches and a UEFA Cup Final Aston Villa 3 successive 6th place finishes, a cup final and the most goals scored in a season since 1981 (07-08) Don't get me wrong, Lambert has a chance, and I'd honestly rather have him as manager for where we are at the moment, but that doesn't mean he is a better manager. He's done nothing in the game to prove that. Yet.
