It doesn't matter what the people who actually think about things think. What matters is the impression. You can see how, to somebody who has absolutely no interest in politics or intention to learn, the idea that he would be best placed to manage Britain's foreign policy because he's mates with Trump might hold an intuitive appeal. It showed very poor statesmanship to meet a man who is an absolute no-mark on the international stage before he'd even phoned many of the actual heads of state he needed to contact. I understand Farage's game, as I was trying to get at above, he's not actually auditioning for UK ambassador or anything like that, he's cannily appealing to the sort of people (a very large proportion of the electorate) for whom politics is nothing more than a soap opera (Theresa's just jel cos Donald likes Nige more, what a saddo!).
