Media and punditry

I do think there’s a lack of people paying attention to what Emery has actually done. Neville there talks about us finishing top 4 in the same way someone who’d not watched football for 18 months and then was asked about us finishing the top 4 would- “oh it’s Villa who aren’t a traditional top team so probably they won’t finish in the top 4 but wouldnt it be nice if they did”

If you look at what has happened under emery where we’ve been consistently a top 3 level team in terms of points per game, plus the fact we already have a head start, it’s gonna take a relative collapse in our form under emery for us to drop out of top 4. From that perspective I’d be “surprised” if we didn’t finish top 4 at this stage

I've actually messaged the BBC about how ridiculously biased their live text reporter is. Some excerpts

"Hey look, I know it's easy to knock Man Utd but, for now at least, they're playing the better football" -16 mins

"Leandro Dendoncker hits the floor quicker than I do when Last Christmas comes on the airwaves. He was caught by Bruno Fernandes to be fair and Villa win a promising wide free-kick."

"Aston Villa are 2-0 at Manchester United and, just as they did when they went 1-0 up against Arsenal, their fans immediately ask if Birmingham City supporters are watching. The dedication to the bit is unreal"

"Aston Villa have hardly touched the ball. This is Manchester United's best period as Marcus Rashford starts off an attack but Diogo Dalot's cross on the overlap is straight at the keeper" -39 mins. Possession stats at the time were 49-51 to us

"Still Manchester United push, and still they're let down by the final ball as Alejandro Garnacho overhits a pass for Marcus Rashford. Aston Villa have a rare counter-attack but United get players back to deal with the danger." -43 mins

"Marcus Rashford reminds us that, on his day, he is a proper baller. The forward creates a chance out of nothing, driving forward about 20 yards and makes some space, but fires into the side-netting. Ezri Konsa can't deal with the speed of his footwork." 44 mins

"Four minutes added on. It is all Man Utd, but Aston Villa are very comfortable, they're doing all they need to do." - 45 mins.

at half time he said we were "class" so they probably got my message. The journo is from Salford so explains everything.

So Amazon have a clear Man Utd fan and ex player In Evra in the studio, was Eni Aluko (someone who was sacked from Villa and doesn’t like us) meant to be the Villa representative??

Utter spunktrumpets, I turned commentary off at half time ( also stopped watching altogether at 2-2 as I knew what was coming from many years of experience).

Post match the studio must look like the set of a porno movie with all the jizzing.

I'd be quite happy to watch the studio jizzing if the host Gabby Logan is getting involved 😛

I don't mind McCoist generally, but **** me he was so annoying tonight, gagging for a Man U win, creaming over every chance, couldn't help himself, very poor tonight. If I was the top guy at Prime TV, I would have had him in the office, an told him to try be a bit less bias. terrible commentating.

I must admit I prefer to watch us live (no commentary!), but I never ever watch us live on the telly box, far too stressful and I get totally fed up with the biased commentary and so called experts comments.

Not watched a live game on the telly since the Villa v Chelsea fa cup final, and the media wankfest over a sky scum 6 team was bad then, sounds even worse now ......

There used to be genuine unbiased commentary years ago, what's happened?.......$$$$$$ in brown envelopes?

Since both the commentary and punditry were fine last night, mostly what seems to have happened is Villa fans have started whining more about this topic for some reason.

It's not in brown paper envelopes, it's via contracts with advertising companies

You need to think about what the audience was last night, it wasn't villa fans who are that in to football they post on forums

Unfortunately the commentary last night was aimed at "die hard" man utd fans watching their 3rd game this season... The sad reality is there was probably a hell of a lot of them watching

I was, and I didn't get the sense that he was anything other than fair and his usual self. I think you're mostly just imagining this to be honest.

He seemed delighted that Hojland scored the winner but I think that was because he had empathy for him as a struggling striker than because he was Man Utd.  I'd much rather listen to McCoist than pretty much anyone else.

No no no, I generally like Mcoist, listen to him on Talksport nearly everyday, but last night he was awful, all over Man U once they scored, getting really excited over them, proper bias.

Emery chopped the Salford fan down in one sentence when asked what has gone wrong, he just said "39 points?" There was a fair bit of stuttering from the interviewer.

Think someone who is that prepared in every other aspect will know who he is about to face in interveiws too now, especially as the media can be so ridiculous in both Spain and England. If he knew the guy was from Salford and had allegiances, and came in first question with such a closed, negative question, he's trying to put Emery on the defensive.

I felt like Emery just flips the narrative completely by firing that really awkward response back at him which leaves Emery with all the power in the interview and the journalist flailing a bit, which leaves him to ask an open question to get Emery talking and gives him a chance to actually analyse the game as a whole and not "can you explain all the bad things".
