Stevo985 Posted October 26, 2015 VT Supporter Share Posted October 26, 2015 I don't mind dogs generally, like some dogs, but i find that the UK sometimes goes way overboard with their dog fetish. I drove to a local park in Solihull with my kids (the park that is within walking distance has no kids facilities, so we have to drive to this one instead ) I found that there is a dog agility 'playground' in the park. Yes, a section of the park has been converted into what looks like a playground with tubes and equipment for dogs to run around. Very strange that the council places emphasis on dogs over children. That sounds brilliant.
Popular Post VillaForever1970
Problem with many modern day dog owners is they don’t realise they amount of work needed, puppy or not. Its why you see increasing annoying flex leads which are convenient child hight because people don’t realise it will take about a year to train a dog to walk with a loose lead, aggressive dogs (because they are scared) and not be trained how to cope and dogs with separation problems because again people don’t realise you have to train a dog to get used to being on its own.You have to train a dog to do everything, it doesn’t just know it straight from being born!If anyone is thinking of getting a dog, its already more work than you’ll anticipate and if you don’t have the time you shouldn’t get one, as it will just incase the amount in rescue centres and when they get full there is only one thing they can do which is just awful.Dogs are awesome if you have the time and they will re-pay you tenfold if you put the effort in.Some people round here don’t even walk their dogs, they seem to think that if they are small and yap at the window that they must be like cats and don’t need walks, jesus wept!

Very good post, there are very few vicious dogs just very irresponsible owners. A pitbull can be the softest dog with correct training.

I'd recommend a book called The Dog Listener, which basically explains the pack thing and why dogs do what they do. It's helped us no end with our Lab pup,

This Could Be Rotterdam
The mutt is making himself at home now. Keeps getting on the seatee as soon as we leave the room and straight back into his bed when we come back in. Not very well today though so he's enjoying the life of Riley with a blanket and plenty of fuss. Part of me thinks he's just playing on it so he keeps being treating like king of the castle.

It's not a new book, which means you can pick one up cheap on ebay, but it's very useful.

turnbull
We took our pup to a 5 week basic training course, which TBH from a training POV, was a bit of waste of money, but at least she socialised with a variety of breeds. We actually learned more from a 10 minute chat with one of the instructors. It wasn't KC related in any way though.

He uses shock collars and abuse, why do you need to abuse a dog when you can train it with food or play? Nonsense and rightly so Pets at Home banned his books this year i think. Popular Post Amsterdam_Neil_D
Tough day today. I moved the date as he was in pain, I will put him to sleep at the vets today at 4.00pm. Everyone came around last night to say bye and it is for the best. I am so unhappy and sad it hurts but i must be strong for him later. He actually likes going to the Vet and the vet has known him since he was born so all in all it is going to be difficult. I have no control over my emotions for various reasons but I never realized how little until the last week. I don't actually have any friends outside work so he really is my best mate. Goodbye Timo the Beagle.

Amsterdam_Neil_D
Thanks everyone. It was super tough, just went for a walk on the normal route after dinner as a tribute to my mate. I thought that I would be OK and not cry or anything, I was severely wrong on that point. Thanks for the kind words, it's been a horrible week.
