We had a Siamese that lived til she was 18.

Cross eyed and apparently the runt of the litter.

Expensive to run (liked Sardines and raw mince), but used used to knock the

front door letterbox when she wanted to come in, and was

a dab hand at climbing curtains.

We are talking about Cats aren't we ?

Preferable to a Honey Badger..

Have no idea how anyone can hate Cats. I think I like Cats more than I like most people.

I particularly don't understand how self-styled dog lovers can hate cats. Having a preference for one or the other, sure - there are pros and cons of each, depending on your circumstances. But if you're the sort of person who is kind to animals, I really can't see why you would actually hate cats - which seems to be the case. It disturbs and disappoints me, frankly.

Agreed 'mjmooney.'

I love all animals and have always wanted to have a dog but have really never lived anywhere with a big enough back garden to accommodate a sufficient dog run. I just wouldn't put a dog into a cramped area as i wouldn't feel right about it.

Like the look of the Husky but apparently Huskies don't like cats so that ones a big no no anyway. Would also like a Collie (Lassie) but i would have to move somewhere with a bigger back garden.

Since i've no children of my own has anyone suffered any problems when bringing a new baby into a household with a cat or cats. Has the cat shown any jealousy towards the baby concerning attention span?

I've been having this, er... debate with a (Villa supporting as it happens) friend on FB.

She's one of those that loves dogs and hates cats - and she's adamant that dogs are great friends and protectors of small children. I'm willing to concede that in the majority of cases, where the dog is well trained, that may be true. But my comment was simply... "'Family cat mauls and kills toddler'... said nobody, ever". Whereas with dogs it happens all too frequently. Personally I would never have had a dog when we had small children.

We did have a cat when our kids were born, and I watched with care. Turned out that he loved them. Alice used to pick him up and carry him around like a sack of potatoes - but he never so much as offered to scratch her. Some cats might, so we were lucky. But they could never do the level of damage that a dog could.

Don't think a socialised cat would ever attack a human being unless it was being provoked and even then it would probably try to get away.

My cats give me gentle bites on the hand or nose but they are love nips and are always followed up with a lick.

Feck me better not say that behind a door. :P

I'm having Winston put to sleep on Monday  :(

It's the right time but I feel awful about it.

It's hard to say goodbye to a longtime friend.

Sorry mate.  That's sad news.  I get miserable when Jemima doesn't come in for the night, never mind anything like that...

She's the younger of our two cats, Tigger being the oldest.  We got him aged 4 and were his 4th different owner.  He's ace!

Thanks NV, and thanks Morpheus for your kind words. Winston started to really suffer yesterday, so I had him put down today instead. It's surreal somehow. But he's not suffering anymore, so I guess I can take solace in that. Still, he was such a great character and a reliable pal.

Mixed feelings, really.

17 or 18. He had a long and happy life, so what more can you do? So many animals are abused and neglected, but Winston had it made. I only wish he didn't suffer so much this past few days, but I can't dwell on that. He's off to the great big tunafish platter in the sky  :)

I edited my post whilst you were typing as I read back through the thread.

That's a good old stretch he had there though.  Tigger's 10 (we think) and I'll be psyched to get another 8 years out of him.  He's ace!  Jemima's great too, but she keeps trying to catch butterflies at the moment, despite my best attempts to teach her that it's ok to catch moths but not butterflies.

This one's for Winston ;)

I like cats and dogs.  The default assumption in here is that you like either one or the other but not both.  So if you say something that can be construed as negative towards, say, cats (even if it isn't actually negative), the default reaction from the de facto cat lot is 'oh you must be one of the other lot, piss off'.  Both sides are quite defensive about their particular animal.
