Hell or High Water is a really good film, not biggest Jeff Bridges fan but this is one of his better works. Ben Foster(not the shit "goalkeeper") a brilliant actor and one of most underrated around especially in psychotic roles

Thinking that it couldn't possibly be as bad as most of the reviews are suggesting, and being a fan of the original, I went to watch Blair Witch at the weekend.

Hooooly shit it was bad. Up there amongst the worst films I've ever seen. It's almost incomprehensible to me that it was made by an actual filmmaker. Who got paid to do it.

It's terrible in literally every single way IMO. It's incoherent, with no build up and really forced, false dialogue and awful acting across the board. Worst of all the same really, really shit, cheap jump scare is used at least 6 times.

Spoiler

And the Blair Witch herself looks **** stupid.

1/10. Gets a mark because the main guy in it bears a passing resemblance to Jez from Peep Show and when another character's head camera is pointed at him I was able to imagine for a moment that I was watching that.

The one from the first half last night, the one from the second half last night, or the one we played our first four or five games with?

Fantastic drama from Jaques Audiard (Director of A Prophet and Rust and Bone) - tells the story of three refugees who flee from the Sri Lankan civil war to make new lives in Paris.

Well recommended :thumb:

So I watched this with the local film club at the cinema yesterday. A guy introduced the film, talked about the awards and the director. Great stuff, then he goes on to tell the whole plot of the movie and even gives away the ending. What the hell? Nothing surprised me while watching it because of his introduction and I think it prevented me from becoming immersed in it. Still enjoyed it though and I'm gonna check out Rust and Bone and A Prophet, without spoilers this time.

What goes through the mind of someone who does that?  It takes a special level of ignorance not to even once consider that people mightn't want to know everything about what they're about to watch.

Glad you still managed to enjoy it despite the spoilers, in fact:

One of the reasons I found the ending so compelling was that although you knew he (Dheepan) had that level of violence 'in his locker' so to speak, it was still quite shocking to see how he carried it all out with such efficiency and cold detachment.

This could be excellent.

Yep, will be going to see it in IMAX too

it will almost inevitably be labelled as another comic book film and of course a fair few don't like comic book films, that couldn't look further away from a captain America film if it tried

I'll be headed to the IMAX as well hopefully.

I've no doubt it'll be seen as just another comic book movie by some, and it could well be. But I don't think that's a bad thing. There are good and bad ones, like any other genre. Marvel have been clever in using their characters to change the formula and pinch ideas from other genres - Cap 2 nicks the style of a 70s espionage thriller and pinches plot elements likewise, Ant-man takes comedy and heist ideas, etc etc, which mixes things up a bit each time.

I don't doubt Dr Strange isn't going to be winning any Oscars but equally it looks like it might be one of the better examples of the genre, it's got a cracking cast, has some awesome visuals already (I'm a very big fan of the image of Strange 'pulling' the flaming whip from between his fingers - it literally looks like hes wrenching the fire from the air), and it's doing something a little different again - magic, other dimensions, spirituality - that we've not seen before, alongside some horror elements according to the director (who has more or less specialised in that field). My only concern right now is the villain. Mads is great so no concern there, but it's what they do with him. He's not a big character at all, and Strange has better villains to mine. Odd choice. Spoiler thoughts...

Spoiler

I'd have good money on Kaecilius being seduced by Dormammu, the traditional Strange big bad, who's Dark Dimension is already confirmed as in the film

Beyond that... It looks right, cast is bang on even with some changes, performances look good... It could be superb.

But if you don't like this sort of thing it's not going to change your mind and it'll be another cinematic nytol for some, like Civil War was. Apparently.

Yeah, what was going on my mind at that time was literally frustration that it didn't surprise me, because I knew that it would have had I not known. Even though he was a former solider, he had a gentle soul.

Did you watch any of his other movies?

Yes, the ones I mentioned before and also the Beat that my Heart Skipped which was very good from what I remember (saw it years ago).

Listening to him I actually thought he had a very intellectual relationship with the movie, detached in a way. I could hear it in the way he spoke about it. As if the story was of little significance and just a tool to guide you through a genre and style of film.

Heard they are making a live version of Lion King.. Can't they think of any new ideas?

I think it could be very good actually if they use the same model as the Jungle Book.  The new Jungle Book movie is brilliant and is spectacular (visually).  It is also being directed by the same dude who did Jungle Book apparently.

Not disputing that they did Jungle Book well, just fed up of seeing new versions of films, you'd hope that writers could come up with something new.
