Our problems lie in midfield and our strikers ability to control the football.

We have more issues than those. A general lack of players who are confident on the ball, press resistant and good passers. A more possession oriented style can be achieved to some extent through work on the training pitch but some personnel changes may be needed.

The alternative is obviously for Gerrard to give up those ambitions of having more possession and being able to control more games. Maybe it’s easier for a club like Villa to have success with another style.

I'd leave Gomez to Eddie Howe. Shame he's not the one making the calls on Newcastle transfers.

By all accounts he wants Ben Godfrey and Lloyd Kelly so think Howe's going to be nicely wasting a good chunk of Newcastle's budget on more average defenders.

We want to play out from the back and we don't have a ball playing centre back. You have another winger in your list when we don't even play with wingers.

I do give up with this discussion. I would have expected more of the posters on this forum to see what Gerrard wants to do, think what players we have and how they got into that. Then suggest players we could sign who fit the system.

Did nobody even watch the Arsenal game? Watch how we failed to play out from the back and break their press.

Let's just get two big CFs and play long balls. Gerrard should stop trying to improve how we play. Get Big Sam in

Thank god someone is talking about the system and how to improve it rather than changing it completely which is just not going to happen.

It is clear a specialist CDM or holding mid is needed to go along with Marvelous who does a job there. A ball playing CB most definitely - people don't seem to realise that the diamond of GK-CB-CB-CDB is the foundation of how to beat the opposing press (aside from going long) and that it needs to improve. Everytime we go CB to FB (Konsa to Cash) we are ****.

To add to this i think a CF is a priority. Neither Watkins nor Ings have the smarts to play the 9 in the system that Gerrard wants to employ and play breaks down with them far too often.

I have a really horrible feeling they're going to spend the summer signing all the players we should be after. While we sign some Liverpool old boys and reserves.

I am more worried that we’re going to spend the entire summer being linked to Kalvin Phillips only for him to sign a new contact with  Leeds or move elsewhere a week before the window ends and we start next season with Dougie playing number 6.

Coutinho and a proven DM are the priority for me, in that order. I have no idea who is the best DM out there we could reasonably get though.

I would also like for us to try and bring through at least one new academy/loan player next season in a senior position. Not every season can bring a Jacob Ramsey but its a good goal.

I agree we need a new CF if we want to play with the Christmas tree formation. I do think they are a good combination if we play split strikers with a single 10. I'd like it if Bailey was tried alongside Watkins in the split striker role.

I’m with you on Bailey, but I’d rather it be Ings who he was partnered with.

DM coutinho and a starting CB. That’s all I want.

You're talking about £100m to get that sorted, £40-50m CDM, £30m Coutinho and £20-30m CB.  Will also need to replace Cash if rumours to Atletico are true.  An some outgoings like Douglas and Sanson.

We're not upgrading on Mings or Konsa for 20-30m. Would need to be a lot more.

Well it depends if you think Joe Gomez is an upgrade on either as that's roughly the fee he's being linked with, but it's likely due to Liverpool looking to offload the player.  But yeah, signing a better CB from someone not looking to sell will cost significantly more.

A few difficult decisions the Club and us as a fanbase will have to make in summer if we want to push on IMO.

Who do we push the boat out to keep, and who do we sacrifice to get players a level above/accommodate youth with higher ceilings etc?

Ings or Watkins?

McGinn | Sanson | Luiz | Chukwuemeka ?

Personally i'm ok with our CB selection for now, obviously we need a full back or 2.

One valid criticism and observation of us, is that we often play and build up WAY too slow, and not just with this manager, so i'm wondering if these are also player limitiations.

Players we now have which have displayed the footballing intelligence and skill to play a fast game off the top of my head IMO are:

Coutinho , Ings, Sanson , Chambers, Digne, Ramsey, Buendia.

Luiz undoubtedly has the technical skill, but sometimes seems to freeze for thinking time, whether that is down to options or not, i'm not sure.

Basically, I reckon we need to improve the overall footballing intelligence of our squad. To improve the accuracy and speed of our play, as well as obviously the physicality of it.

That is if we decide to sell Cash to Atletico. He said he’s happy here so no need to sell unless the offer is huge.

Villa are actually among the teams that progress the ball the fastest (hoofing is a very fast method).

Playing quick passes isn’t the same as being in a hurry to go forward, so what you’re saying isn’t necessarily wrong.

agree

arsenal paid £50m for ben white last summer, spurs paid £55m for Romero

it'd be a record transfer for us to get a starter at CB and I'm not sure who it is either, other than the Pau Torres link form last summer and i don't know where that came from or how much of a stretch that is - it would be a mental signing for a mid table PL club - i haven't seen anyone's name and thought he's 100% the answer

And yet Milan signed Tomori for £25m, West Ham signed Zouma for £30m.  So it is possible to sign a quality CB for that price.

Demiral is probably someone we should be looking at if we wanted an upgrade, feels like the sort Leicester would pick up. Excellent in the air and good recovery pace. No idea what fee Atalanta would want for him though.

Haven't we been linked to Hermoso in the past? He's just a sub for Atletico Madrid these days so possible they might loan him out for 12 months or sell him for about 25m.

He's only on loan at Atalanta.
