Oh i agree in the main but I don't really think that covers it all. They did play better but you can at least try and negate that by setting up differently. if we had another body in the middle or someone else up top to hold the ball up and turn Arsenal's midfield around then it would have made a huge difference. As it was the ball kept coming back and we were not able to keep it tight before trying to impose our game. At the very highest level all it takes is one opportunity and we could have gone 1 up and then it's a different (obviously) ball game and Arsenal also have to re-think.

Clearly better players and better teams usually win. But Arsenal were given an extra hand by us playing to their strenmgths and not ours.

I don't disagree in principle.....but when you say another body, that means you lose one from some where else.....and teams will exploit that.

players have to individually play well, to create the collective performance, too.

The last real defensive midfielder we had was probably Nigel Reo Coker.

and he had his detractors.

I think we have played without them for so long, its a) got in to our DNA ....b) as a fan base we don't appreciate what they do ( that is relating to a section only)

If they collectively played better, then that’s tactics isn’t it?

partly, but not entirely.

  • It could be balance
  • it could be desire
  • It could be gameplan ( but it has to be executed)
  • It could be workrate.

Tactics is only a part of the essence of playing well.

We've had loads of defensive midfielders since NRC to be fair, whatever about the relative quality of them but we've had them alright.

Yep, Makoun, Whelan, Jedinak, Sylla, Nakamba to name a few

I reckon Makoun was yet another French player which was actually decent, but wasted here.

Anyway, the lists of " Defensive Midfielders " we've had, is pretty grim.

Although I still love Jedinak.

Jedinak and Whelan were immense.

We missed both of them when they left

They are not midtable premier league quality, but for where we were when they left, they were missed. And the last defensive midfielder we had was not NRC.

The last striker Nottingham Forest had wasn't Pierre van Hooijdonk
